A Dalit girl residing at Lucknow University's BR Ambedkar Hostel was allegedly subjected to physical manhandling and targeted with casteist abuse by a group of fellow hostel residents. The incident, which has sparked outrage, occurred after she uploaded a photograph of BR Ambedkar as the display picture in the hostel's WhatsApp group, where she served as an administrator.

The altercation took place on March 26 at the university's second campus. In response, the proctor's office at Lucknow University has formed a panel to investigate the matter. On Wednesday, the panel began its probe by recording statements from both the complainant and the accused girls.
The complainant, who is a third-year LLB student, provided a detailed account to the media. She stated, "I was physically manhandled and verbally abused with casteist slurs by some girls in the hostel just because of the WhatsApp group profile picture. The provost and Dean Students' Welfare also came to meet me but did not offer any help, after which I mailed my complaint to the proctor of the university."
