Ganjam District Administration Reinstates Water Bell Initiative Across All Schools
The Ganjam district administration has announced the reintroduction of the water bell initiative in all 3,889 government and privately-run schools across the district, effective from Saturday. This move aims to address health concerns related to dehydration among schoolchildren.
Initiative Details and Implementation
Under this program, a bell will be rung every hour during school hours to remind students to pause their activities and drink water. The goal is to prevent dehydration, fatigue, and associated health issues that can arise from inadequate water intake.
Collector V. Keerthi Vassan stated, "We have instructed the district education officer (DEO) to develop guidelines and circulate them to all schools." He added, "Additionally, we have requested the DEO to ensure a visitors' room for parents is available with sufficient drinking water."
Benefits and Infrastructure Support
DEO AK Patro emphasized that this initiative will significantly benefit schoolchildren, who often neglect drinking enough water. He noted that RO water facilities are available in nearly all schools, and authorities have been directed to stock ORS packets to assist students or parents who may fall ill due to heat-related conditions.
Academic Endorsement and Historical Context
Academicians have welcomed the decision, highlighting its positive impact on student well-being. Shankar Narayan Bej, a retired block education officer (BEO), commented, "The water bell initiative not only supports students' physical health but also enhances concentration and alertness."
The water bell initiative was first introduced by the Ganjam district administration in 2019 but was discontinued after a few months. Its revival underscores the ongoing commitment to improving student health and academic performance through proactive measures.
