Gujarat Teacher Eligibility Test-1 Results Declared with Disappointing 12.03% Pass Percentage
The Gujarat State Examination Board officially announced the results of the Teacher Eligibility Test–1 (TET-1) on Thursday, revealing a concerningly low overall pass percentage of just 12.03%. This examination, conducted specifically for recruiting teachers for Classes 1 to 5 in government schools across Gujarat, has highlighted significant challenges in the state's teacher selection process.
Examination Details and Candidate Performance
The TET-1 examination was administered on December 21 across multiple centers in Ahmedabad Rural, Vadodara, Surat, and Rajkot. A total of 91,628 candidates appeared for this crucial test, but only 11,027 managed to qualify successfully. This means that a staggering 80,602 candidates failed to meet the required eligibility criteria, underscoring the difficulty level of the assessment.
The examination was structured for a total of 150 marks, with different qualifying thresholds for various categories. Candidates from reserved categories needed to secure a minimum of 82 marks to be declared qualified, while general category candidates faced a higher benchmark of at least 90 marks to pass the test.
Alarming Performance Trends Across Score Brackets
The results data reveals extremely poor performance in the higher score ranges, raising questions about the overall preparation levels of candidates. Across all examination mediums, only four candidates managed to score above 121 marks, indicating a severe shortage of high-performing aspirants.
In the Gujarati medium specifically, just one candidate achieved marks in the 141–150 range, demonstrating the exceptional difficulty of attaining top scores. Only three candidates secured marks between 121 and 140, while 804 candidates scored in the 101–120 bracket.
At the lower end of the performance spectrum, the numbers are equally concerning. According to official board statistics, 33,827 candidates failed to score even 60 marks, while 2,257 candidates could not cross the 40-mark threshold. The majority of candidates—43,136 individuals—scored between 60 and 81 marks, falling short of the qualifying criteria. Only 4,141 candidates managed to secure scores in the 90–100 range.
Medium-Wise Performance Analysis Reveals Significant Disparities
A detailed breakdown of performance across different language mediums shows substantial variations in success rates:
- Gujarati Medium: Out of 88,659 candidates who appeared, 10,825 qualified, resulting in a pass percentage of 12.2%.
- English Medium: With 1,003 candidates appearing, only 98 qualified, registering a pass percentage of 8.9%.
- Hindi Medium: This medium reported the lowest success rate, with just 104 out of 1,764 candidates passing, resulting in a mere 5.6% pass rate.
These statistics highlight not only the overall low qualification rates but also significant disparities in performance across different language mediums, with Hindi medium candidates facing particular challenges in meeting the eligibility requirements.
The TET-1 results have sparked discussions about the quality of teacher preparation, the effectiveness of current training programs, and potential reforms needed in the examination system to ensure adequate recruitment of qualified teachers for Gujarat's government schools. The low pass percentage across all categories suggests systemic issues that require immediate attention from educational authorities.
