Tamil Nadu Headmistress Suspended for Dancing to Vijay Song at Women's Day Event

A 58-year-old government school headmistress from Thanjavur district in Tamil Nadu has been suspended after she danced to a song from a Vijay movie at an International Women's Day event earlier this month. The suspension order was issued on Wednesday following an inquiry by the school education department.

Violation of Conduct Rules Leads to Action

Sources indicate that the action was taken because, as a government employee, her participation in a political party event and dancing on stage violated the Tamil Nadu Government Servants' Conduct Rules of 1973. The incident has sparked discussions about the boundaries of personal expression for public servants.

Krishnaveni, aged 58 and hailing from Pinnaiyur, served as the headmistress of the panchayat union elementary school at Sankaranatharkudikadu. She was also in charge of another school at Vellathevanviduthi, highlighting her significant role in the local education system.

Event Details and Viral Video

On March 8, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) conducted events across Tamil Nadu to celebrate International Women's Day. During the event held near Orathanadu, Krishnaveni danced to the song 'Kodampakkam area' from the 2005 movie Sivakasi, in which TVK president Vijay had acted.

Attendees recorded a video of Krishnaveni's dance performance, which began circulating on social media. After gaining traction for more than two weeks, the video eventually came to the attention of the school education department, prompting an official investigation.

Suspension Order Issued

Following the inquiry, V Mathiyazhagan, the district primary education officer of Pattukkottai educational district, ordered the suspension of headmistress Krishnaveni. This decision underscores the strict enforcement of conduct rules for government employees in Tamil Nadu.

The case raises questions about the interpretation of these rules in the context of cultural and celebratory events, particularly those aimed at empowering women. As the video continues to circulate online, it has drawn mixed reactions from the public regarding the appropriateness of the suspension.
