Jaipur Schools Shift Focus from Grades to Competency in Mega Parent-Teacher Meeting
In a significant move to enhance parent engagement, the school education department in Jaipur has issued new directives for an upcoming mega parent-teacher meeting (PTM) scheduled for March 25. Teachers have been instructed to shift their focus from merely discussing grades to engaging in detailed conversations about students' competency levels.
Emphasis on Holistic Learning Progress
According to a senior official, the primary objective of this PTM is to center discussions on students' actual learning levels rather than their grades alone. Teachers are expected to share comprehensive insights into each student's progress by reviewing multiple assessment tools. These include AI-based competency-based assessments, holistic report cards, annual examination results, and oral reading fluency results.
For oral reading fluency, teachers have been specifically asked to inform parents about how a student performs compared to their cohort. Additionally, they must address the extent of improvement in reading skills from the baseline assessment to the end-line assessment, providing a clearer picture of developmental strides.
Encouraging Textbook Recycling
Beyond academic discussions, the mega PTM will also feature an initiative to promote sustainability. Students are encouraged to submit 50% of their old free textbooks, along with any unused books, to be kept in the school library. This effort aims to reduce waste and foster a culture of resource sharing within the educational community.
This strategic shift underscores a broader trend in education towards valuing competency and holistic development over traditional grading systems, potentially setting a precedent for other regions to follow.
