JU allows UG students to exit after third year

Kolkata: Jadavpur University arts and science students, pursuing four-year undergraduate (UG) courses, will now have the option of exiting after completing their third year, as prescribed by NEP 2020. Such students will receive a bachelor’s degree without honours.

A circular uploaded on the university’s website signed by registrar Selim Box Mandal stated that the vice-chancellor approved the lateral exit from four-year honours courses after completion of the third-year. The circular also outlined the guidelines for exit.

Like other state universities, JU implemented the four-year UG programme in 2023 and the first batch of the course is currently appearing for its sixth semester exams.

The circular states that students, who have cleared all the papers from their first to sixth semesters, may opt out of the UG course but to get a bachelor’s degree without honours, they have to score minimum 120 credits and complete the compulsory 60- to 120-hour (two to four credits) internship. Those failing in any paper in their fifth or sixth semester exams can appear in special supplementary exams to clear them before they can exit.

An official said, “A student must apply for the exit after the sixth-semester results are out. Deadlines are set before the start of the seventh semester or before the special supplementary exams for those with backlog papers.”
