Maharashtra Digitizes Sports Grace Marks Process for SSC and HSC Students
The state school education department in Maharashtra has implemented a significant reform by digitizing the process for awarding sports grace marks to Secondary School Certificate (SSC, Std X) and Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC, Std XII) students. This initiative aims to streamline operations, enhance transparency, and reduce administrative burdens, providing substantial relief to student athletes across the state.
New Online Application System and Timelines
Under a newly issued government resolution (GR), students seeking sports quota marks must now submit their applications online between January 1 and April 15 each year. This digital shift is designed to make the process more efficient and accessible. Importantly, the service has been brought under the ambit of the Service Guarantee Act, which mandates that authorities complete the entire process within 15 days of receiving an application. This legal framework ensures timely processing and accountability.
Encouraging Sports Participation and Eliminating Delays
Officials have stated that the primary goal of this move is to encourage greater sports participation among students while eliminating the procedural delays that often discourage them from applying. The revised system will drastically cut down the time required for verification and approval of sports marks, reflecting a shift towards more efficient and student-friendly governance, according to district sports officer Jagannath Lakade.
This reform follows concerns raised by various sports bodies, including the Maharashtra Olympic Association, regarding excessive documentation and prolonged procedural delays. By leveraging the state's Aaple Sarkar portal, authorities have redesigned the system to minimize administrative hurdles and improve user experience.
Simplification of Application Process
As part of the simplification efforts, the number of fields in the application form has been reduced from 29 to 21, making it less cumbersome for students to complete. Similarly, the number of mandatory documents required has been cut from eight to six, further easing the application burden.
Key student details—such as name, date of birth, gender, address, and school information—will now be auto-fetched from the examination hall ticket. This automation not only simplifies the process but also reduces the likelihood of errors and delays associated with manual data entry.
Importance of Timely Applications
Education department officials have emphasized the critical importance of submitting applications on time. Students must ensure they submit their applications before April 15 to secure recommendations from district sports officers, said Dipak Mali, secretary of the state board. Any delay could lead to disqualification from availing the benefit, underscoring the need for prompt action by student athletes.
The state government grants concession marks to student athletes under its sports policy to promote a robust sporting culture.
