Mangaluru's Nada School Celebrates a Century of Dedicated Service to Rural Education
Nestled in the picturesque surroundings of Belthangady taluk, the Government Higher Primary School in Nada has reached a remarkable milestone, celebrating 100 years of unwavering commitment to rural education. What began in a modest house belonging to a local resident has blossomed into a model public institution, transforming the lives of countless students over the decades.
Humble Beginnings and Philanthropic Roots
Established on November 25, 1925, by the philanthropist Chandaiah Ajri of Nada Guttu, the school was founded with a noble mission: to provide educational opportunities for underprivileged children in the region. In its initial days, classes were conducted in Chandaiah's own house, a testament to the community-driven spirit that fueled its inception. Harish Kumar, former MLC and Mescom chairman, who played a pivotal role in the school's revival, shared insights into its early history. He noted that the school later shifted to a location near Basadi, driven by Chandaiah's vision that children in rural areas should have access to quality education.
Transformation into a Modern Educational Hub
Over the years, the school has undergone a significant transformation, evolving from its humble origins into a fully equipped institution. A key milestone in this journey was the construction of a new school building, completed at a cost of Rs 1.5 crore, largely due to the efforts of Harish Kumar. This state-of-the-art facility, inaugurated one year ago with government grants, now houses spacious classrooms, a well-stocked library, a playground, an auditorium, and modern sanitation facilities. Harish Kumar not only provided crucial funding but also supported the school by paying teachers' salaries and contributing to infrastructure development for many years, ensuring its sustained growth.
Centenary Celebrations and Community Involvement
The centenary celebrations of the Nada School commenced on August 23, 2025, and concluded recently, marking a century of educational excellence. Pushpa, the school's headmistress, highlighted the enthusiastic participation of alumni, locals, and well-wishers in the festivities. As part of the celebrations, several developmental works were undertaken, including the interlocking of the campus, construction of an open auditorium, and enhancement of the main entrance. Pushpa added that a series of programs were held over the last few months, reflecting the community's deep connection to the institution.
Current Impact and Future Aspirations
Today, the school continues to serve as a beacon of hope, educating 104 students and upholding its legacy of empowering rural youth. The centenary not only commemorates past achievements but also underscores the ongoing commitment to fostering education in underserved areas. As the Nada School looks ahead, it stands as a shining example of how philanthropy, community effort, and government support can converge to create lasting educational impact.
