Nagpur University Probe Panel Blocked from College Campus Amid Allegations
A four-member committee appointed by Nagpur University's Senate to investigate serious allegations against the officiating principal of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar College, Deekshabhoomi, was reportedly prevented from entering the campus on Monday. According to sources, police personnel and private bouncers were deployed to stop the team, triggering high drama outside the college premises and raising questions about the alleged obstruction of an official probe.
Investigation Details and Campus Access Issues
The panel, led by Senate member Nitin Kongre, is investigating multiple allegations against officiating principal Deepa Yash Panhekar. These include withholding faculty promotions, harassment, ill-treatment, and bribery. This incident marks the second time the committee has failed to access the campus to record statements from complainants and the accused, as well as to gather crucial evidence for the inquiry.
Principal's Defense and Legal Challenges
In response, Panhekar stated that the college management has challenged the formation of the inquiry committee in court. Although no stay has been granted, she claimed the university had previously indicated it would await the court's decision. Panhekar also alleged bias, noting that the Senate member who raised the issue was appointed as the panel head. She added that the panel's previous visit on February 11 disrupted the academic environment, justifying the need to prevent further intrusion.
University's Stance and Panel's Claims
Kongre, however, countered that the university administration had directed the panel to proceed since there is no court stay despite multiple hearings. "We even sought police protection as the principal was not cooperating. Preventing entry is an insult to the university," he said. He emphasized that the obstruction undermines the authority and integrity of the investigative process.
Serious Allegations from Faculty and Staff
Kongre further revealed that the panel has received numerous complaints from faculty and staff, detailing severe issues under Panhekar's tenure. The allegations include:
- Prolonged denial of promotions for eligible faculty members.
- Demands for bribes in exchange for professional advancements.
- Abrupt termination of contractual employees without due process.
- Installation of CCTV cameras in washrooms, raising privacy concerns.
The situation highlights ongoing tensions between university oversight and college administration, with implications for academic governance and employee welfare in Nagpur's educational institutions.
