Noida's NIPUN Assessment Performance Plummets, Ranking Drops to 70th in State
In a concerning development for education in the region, Noida has recorded a sharp fall in its NIPUN assessment performance in government schools this year. According to the annual report, only 123 out of 420 schools, or a mere 29%, achieved NIPUN status. This marks a significant drop from the previous year, where 330 out of 378 schools met the benchmark, showcasing a stark decline in foundational learning outcomes.
Comparative Performance Across Districts
The district now ranks 70th in the state, highlighting a severe setback in educational standards. In neighboring Ghaziabad, the situation is even more dire, with only 65 out of 365 schools qualifying, placing it among the lowest-performing districts. This contrasts sharply with top performers like Hardoi, Aligarh, and Shahjahanpur, which have emerged as leaders in terms of the number of NIPUN schools.
Block-Level Disparities Within Noida
Within Noida, the performance varies significantly across blocks. In Bisrakh, only 19 out of 117 schools were found proficient, while in Jewar, 93 schools were assessed with just 15 achieving proficiency. These two blocks achieved a mere 16% success rate. Dadri and Dankaur blocks fared slightly better, with about 51% of schools in Dadri and 35% in Dankaur achieving Nipun status, as reported by a DIET official.
Widening Gap Between Districts
The report also points to a widening gap between top-performing districts and tailenders. For instance, Aligarh recorded 66% proficiency, Kasganj 64%, and Maharajganj 61%, in contrast to Noida's 29% and Ghaziabad's 17%. This disparity is particularly notable as both Noida and Ghaziabad are part of the National Capital Region and boast comparatively better infrastructure than many largely rural districts, raising questions about resource utilization and teaching effectiveness.
Teachers Cite Non-Academic Responsibilities
Teachers have attributed the decline to increasing non-academic responsibilities. A government school teacher in Noida stated, "A significant portion of our time was spent on duties like SIR work and BLO assignments this year, which directly affects classroom teaching." Similarly, a teacher from Ghaziabad highlighted that frequent administrative and election-related duties disrupt regular teaching, adversely impacting focus on foundational literacy and numeracy skills.
Official Response and Future Strategy
In response to the disappointing results, Rahul Panwar, BSA of Noida, acknowledged the shortcomings. "The results haven't met expectations. We will analyse the shortcomings. A meeting with teachers will soon be held to formulate a future strategy," he said. This indicates a planned effort to address the issues and improve performance in upcoming assessments.
The NIPUN assessment, which evaluates basic numeracy and reading skills of students in classes 1 to 4, is crucial for early education development. The sharp fall in Noida's performance underscores the need for targeted interventions to enhance teaching quality and reduce administrative burdens on educators.
