Odisha Prepares Major Textbook Overhaul for Next Academic Year
The Odisha government has announced a significant educational reform. Starting from the next academic session, students in classes 1 to 8 will receive 55 new textbooks. This decision emerged from a high-level meeting chaired by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
Focus on National Education Policy Implementation
State officials confirmed the meeting focused on implementing the National Education Policy 2020. They discussed the state's readiness to introduce new textbooks aligned with the national curriculum framework. State School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond and senior officers attended this crucial gathering.
The State Council of Educational Research and Training has completed translating and contextualizing these textbooks. They adapted NCERT materials to reflect Odisha's local needs, culture, and heritage. This localization ensures the content resonates with students across the state.
Three New Subjects for Holistic Development
Minister Gond revealed that Odisha is introducing three new subjects. These include Art Education, Physical Education & Well-being, and Vocational Education. The goal is to promote holistic development among students.
"These reforms go beyond mere curriculum change," Gond emphasized. "They represent our collective commitment to shaping children's future and Odisha's progress."
Massive Teacher Training Initiative Underway
To ensure smooth implementation, the government has trained 1,000 master resource persons. These trainers will subsequently train over 1.66 lakh primary teachers across Odisha. This cascade training model aims to prepare educators thoroughly for the new curriculum.
Union Minister Pradhan reviewed curriculum development progress and capacity building of resource persons. He advised district officials to actively engage students and parents. Creating awareness and enthusiasm about the new textbooks is crucial for success.
Broader Educational Reforms Emphasized
During the meeting, Pradhan stressed several key educational priorities. He emphasized promoting mother-tongue-based education at least up to class 5. Strengthening the PM-Poshan scheme received special attention. The minister also highlighted implementing 10 bagless school days annually for students in classes 6 to 10.
This comprehensive textbook overhaul represents Odisha's commitment to educational excellence. By aligning with NEP 2020 while incorporating local context, the state aims to create a more engaging and relevant learning experience for young students.
