Pilibhit Tiger Reserve Pioneers Inclusive Wildlife Experience for Disabled Students
In a landmark initiative for inclusivity and conservation, the Pilibhit Tiger Reserve in Uttar Pradesh hosted its first-ever free safari exclusively for physically challenged students from government primary and upper primary schools on Wednesday. The event, named "Divya Darshan", was a collaborative effort between the reserve authorities and the basic education department, designed to provide equal opportunities for children with disabilities to engage with nature.
Unprecedented Participation and Logistics
A total of 110 children participated in the program, accompanied by their parents and 52 teachers. To facilitate the safari, the organizers arranged 25 safari vehicles, each with a seating capacity of nine, ensuring comfortable and accessible transportation for all attendees. Basic education coordinator Rakesh Patel informed that the students included those with speech and hearing impairments as well as orthopaedic disabilities, highlighting the event's comprehensive approach to inclusion.
The students expressed immense excitement, describing the safari as an inimitable and memorable experience, as it marked their first time witnessing wildlife in a natural jungle setting. This hands-on encounter aimed to foster a deeper connection with conservation efforts and the environment.
Empowering Message and Future Initiatives
Divisional Forest Officer Manish Singh emphasized the event's broader societal message, stating, "We intend to communicate that physical disability can never overshadow the journey of success if a person is swayed by optimism and passion. Challenges are put in our way not to stop us but to summon our courage and inner strength." He further announced that the children would be offered opportunities to serve as brand ambassadors for the reserve's future programs, empowering them as advocates for wildlife conservation.
Singh confirmed that the event will not only be replicated in the coming years but will also include a special session at the reserve headquarters. This session will feature audio-visual presentations on various species, from carnivores and herbivores to reptiles, birds, and insects, with the goal of transforming the students into wildlife experts through educational engagement.
Recognition and Expansion Plans
Field Director of Corbett Tiger Reserve, Saket Badola, who attended as chief guest, praised the initiative as "unique" and committed to arranging a similar event at Corbett Tiger Reserve. This endorsement underscores the potential for such programs to be adopted across other conservation areas, promoting inclusivity on a larger scale.
The "Divya Darshan" event sets a precedent for integrating disability inclusion into environmental education, demonstrating how wildlife reserves can play a pivotal role in fostering social equity and conservation awareness among all segments of society.
