Rajasthan Education Minister Uncovers Alarming Deficiencies in Government Schools
In a series of unannounced visits to government schools in Sriganganagar district, Rajasthan Education Minister Madan Dilawar on Wednesday exposed critical systemic failures, highlighting low student enrolment, rampant teacher absenteeism, and basic academic gaps that undermine the quality of public education.
Shocking Disparities in Student-Teacher Ratio
During his inspection of a government school in 3HH village, Minister Dilawar discovered a deeply concerning situation. Despite six teachers being officially posted at the institution, only 32 students were enrolled. The school principal, Girija Shankar, was absent without prior approval, and two other teachers were also on leave without providing any intimation. This prompted the minister to immediately direct disciplinary action against the absent staff.
"Why are there only 32 children in the school in a village with a population of around 700?" Dilawar questioned the teachers present. "With six teachers for just 32 students, the academic results should have been 100% here." The situation was even more dire in Class 7, where only three students were present during the inspection.
Fundamental Academic Failures Exposed
To assess the actual learning levels, the minister conducted an impromptu test with a Class 8 student. He asked, "What do you get if you add 2 to 49?" The student incorrectly replied, "60." This basic mathematical error led Dilawar to reprimand the teaching staff severely.
"If a student cannot even perform simple addition, how is any learning taking place in this school?" the minister stated, emphasizing the foundational gaps in education delivery.
Infrastructure and Administrative Negligence
The minister's inspection extended to 1 DBND School in Bhagwangarh, which was upgraded to senior secondary status in 2021. However, the entrance board still incorrectly displayed 'secondary school.' Furthermore, Dilawar found no water supply in the restrooms, and the signage outside the boys' and girls' toilets was swapped, creating confusion and inconvenience.
He directed officials to rectify these issues immediately, stressing the importance of proper infrastructure for a conducive learning environment. Teachers at the school admitted they did not expect a ministerial visit to such a small institution, highlighting the element of surprise in these inspections.
Accountability of Education Officials Questioned
Minister Dilawar also questioned Chief District Education Officer Arvinder Singh about the frequency and effectiveness of regular inspections conducted by the education department. The lack of oversight and monitoring mechanisms was implicitly criticized as a contributing factor to the prevailing conditions.
The surprise inspections have brought to light the urgent need for systemic reforms in Rajasthan's government schools, focusing on teacher accountability, student enrolment drives, and infrastructure development to ensure quality education for all.
