On Thursday, the District Education Officer, Minarani Mangal, sent a formal instruction to all principals, headmasters, and headmistresses across Subarnapur. The directive is clear and specific: each school must designate a single, well-maintained classroom as the 'Gurubari Meher Kakshya'. The order further states that this dedicated space should be used strictly for academic purposes, ensuring it remains a functional part of daily learning while serving as a memorial.
Remembering the 'Soldier of Western Odisha'
This initiative brings the spotlight back on the courageous life and sacrifice of Gurubari Meher. She is celebrated in Odisha's history, particularly within the Prajamandal Movement, as the 'soldier of western Odisha'. Her defining moment of bravery occurred on January 28, 1947.
On that fateful day, she led a mass movement against the then king of Subarnapur, which was known as Sonepur at the time. The protest was a response to a reign of terror unleashed by the king's forces at Binkia.
