In a significant move to honour a local hero, the administration of Subarnapur district in Odisha has issued a directive to all educational institutions. The order mandates that every school in the district must dedicate one classroom to the memory of freedom fighter Gurubari Meher.
Official Directive for Lasting Tribute
On Thursday, the District Education Officer, Minarani Mangal, sent a formal instruction to all principals, headmasters, and headmistresses across Subarnapur. The directive is clear and specific: each school must designate a single, well-maintained classroom as the 'Gurubari Meher Kakshya'. The order further states that this dedicated space should be used strictly for academic purposes, ensuring it remains a functional part of daily learning while serving as a memorial.
Remembering the 'Soldier of Western Odisha'
This initiative brings the spotlight back on the courageous life and sacrifice of Gurubari Meher. She is celebrated in Odisha's history, particularly within the Prajamandal Movement, as the 'soldier of western Odisha'. Her defining moment of bravery occurred on January 28, 1947.
On that fateful day, she led a mass movement against the then king of Subarnapur, which was known as Sonepur at the time. The protest was a response to a reign of terror unleashed by the king's forces at Binkia. During the confrontation, Gurubari Meher was shot dead by police, cementing her legacy as a martyr for the cause of freedom and people's rights in the region.
Impact and Legacy in Modern Education
The district's decision to integrate this historical tribute into the school infrastructure is a powerful step in civic education. By having a Gurubari Meher Kakshya in every school, from primary to higher secondary levels, the administration aims to ensure that her story is not forgotten. It provides a constant, tangible reminder for students about the local heroes who fought for India's independence and social justice.
This move goes beyond symbolic naming. It actively weaves the region's history into the everyday environment of young learners. Teachers can use this dedicated classroom as a starting point for lessons on India's freedom struggle, the role of women in the movement, and the specific history of the Prajamandal Movement in Odisha. It fosters a sense of local pride and historical connection among the youth of Subarnapur district.
