Surat RTE Admissions Deadline Extended by Six Days to April 23
The Gujarat state government has announced a significant extension to the application deadline for admissions under the Right to Education (RTE) Act in private schools across Surat. Parents now have until April 23 to submit their applications, a six-day extension from the original deadline of April 17.
Revised Admission Schedule and Processing Details
This extension will necessitate a complete revision of the admission schedule. Officials confirmed that the first round of admissions, which was initially scheduled for April 29, will likely be rescheduled to a later date. The application process for the 2026–27 academic year commenced on April 4, and this extension provides crucial additional time for eligible families.
In Surat, authorities have already processed a substantial number of applications. Out of the 31,594 forms submitted by the original deadline, a total of 4,961 applications have been cancelled. The remaining applications have been processed with 23,001 approved and 1,238 rejected in the city area.
Overwhelming Demand and Rural Area Statistics
The demand for seats under the RTE Act continues to far exceed availability. Overall, more than 40,000 applications have been received against only 16,863 available seats in private schools across both city and rural areas of Surat. This highlights the critical need for these reserved admissions.
In rural areas of Surat, 8,762 application forms were submitted. Of these, 5,401 have been approved, 547 rejected, and 2,426 cancelled before processing. The RTE Act, enacted in 2009, mandates that children from weaker and disadvantaged sections are entitled to free admission in Class 1 in private unaided schools.
Reason for the Extension and Document Challenges
Officials stated that the extension was granted primarily because many parents faced difficulties in obtaining necessary documents required for the application process. Key documents such as income certificates and non-creamy layer certificates have been challenging to acquire due to local officials being heavily engaged in ongoing election duties across the state.
This administrative hurdle has delayed many families from completing their applications on time, prompting the government to provide this additional window to ensure eligible children do not miss out on their right to education.
