WBCHSE Begins Distribution of Model Question Papers for 2026 Higher Secondary Exams

The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) has officially commenced the distribution of model question papers for the upcoming Uchha Madhyamik or Higher Secondary semester 4 board examinations scheduled for 2026. This significant step aims to provide students with essential preparation materials well in advance of the crucial tests.

Wide Availability Across Multiple Centers

According to WBCHSE president Chiranjib Bhattacharya, the model papers covering 22 different subjects have been made available since January 27 at the council's head office and five regional centers across the state. This strategic distribution ensures that educational institutions throughout West Bengal can access these vital resources for their students' benefit.

Concerns Over Timing and Response

While the distribution has begun, some educators have expressed concerns about the timing. With semester 4 exams scheduled between February 12 and 27, principals and teachers, particularly from science streams, worry that releasing papers at the end of January leaves insufficient preparation time.

Raja De, headmaster of state-run Mitra Institution, emphasized that "very little time remains for students to make effective use of these model papers during exam preparation, especially for science subjects that require extensive practice."

In response to these concerns, WBCHSE Secretary Priyadarshini Mallick has announced that efforts are actively underway to upload PDF versions of the model papers online. This digital initiative aims to ensure quicker and wider access for all students across the state, potentially mitigating the timing challenges.

Modernization of Curriculum and Examination Pattern

President Bhattacharya further highlighted the council's ongoing efforts to modernize the higher secondary curriculum. Several science-related subjects, including Computer Science and Computer Application, have received syllabus updates to reflect contemporary developments.

The council has introduced new subjects to align with current academic and technological trends:

  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Data Science
  • Cyber Security

The examination pattern itself has undergone significant transformation. The West Bengal Uchha Madhyamik question papers under the new system are specifically designed to enhance analytical and writing skills:

  1. Semesters one and three feature multiple-choice questions to encourage reasoning abilities
  2. Semesters two and four focus on short, descriptive answers to develop writing proficiency

This 2026 WB HS examination marks the definitive end of the traditional annual system that had been in place since 1978, representing a major shift in West Bengal's educational assessment methodology.

Background: Previous Semester Results

The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education declared results for the state's first-ever semester-based Uchha Madhyamik board examinations on October 31. The results revealed:

  • A pass percentage of 93.72%
  • Approximately 6.45 lakh students appeared for the new-format exams
  • 56.03% of total candidates were girls
  • Exams conducted at 2,106 centers across West Bengal

This successful implementation of the semester system provides context for the current distribution of model papers, as the council continues to refine and improve the examination process for West Bengal's higher secondary students.
