UP Medical College Suspends 11 MBBS Students Over Ragging Allegations
In a significant disciplinary action, a government medical college in Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh, has suspended eleven second-year MBBS students following a formal complaint of ragging lodged by a first-year student. The complaint was escalated to the National Medical Commission's (NMC) anti-ragging helpline, prompting a thorough investigation by the college authorities.

The first-year medical student alleged that he was subjected to humiliation and physical assault by second-year students approximately six weeks ago. Initially, the college conducted an internal inquiry into the matter. However, after the victim approached the NMC anti-ragging helpline, the case gained heightened attention, leading to a more rigorous review.
According to an action-taken report submitted by the college, the disciplinary measures varied among the accused students. One student was fined Rs 10,000 and suspended for six weeks, while another received a similar fine with a four-week suspension. A third student faced a Rs 5,000 fine and a two-week suspension. The remaining eight students were suspended for two weeks without any monetary penalty.
College's Response and Zero Tolerance Policy
Dr. Tuhin Vashisht, the principal of the medical college, emphasized on Thursday that the institution maintains a "zero tolerance policy towards ragging." He stated, "Action has been taken after our internal inquiry process was complete. Parents of all the students were summoned. The college is now working to ensure a safe environment on campus for first-year students."
An official involved in the case revealed that the victim, who hails from another state, is still recovering from the mental distress caused by the incident. To support affected individuals and promote a secure atmosphere, counselling sessions have been organized on campus.

Meanwhile, some students, speaking on condition of anonymity, contested the severity of the punishments. They alleged that "a few of those punished were merely present during the incident and were not directly involved" in the ragging activities. This has sparked discussions about the fairness and scope of the disciplinary actions taken by the college administration.
