Berhampur University Senate Meets After Six-Year Gap

Berhampur University Senate Holds Historic Meeting After Legislative Revival

Berhampur University witnessed a significant academic event on Friday as its senate convened for the first time in nearly six years. This meeting followed the reinstatement of the senate under the recently implemented Odisha Universities (Amendment) Act, 2024. The previous gathering had occurred way back in December 2018, marking a prolonged period without this crucial governing body's formal assembly.

Strong Attendance and Key Appointments

The meeting saw active participation from the senate's membership. Out of a total of 47 members, many attended in person at the university campus while others joined virtually through digital platforms. This hybrid approach ensured broad representation despite logistical challenges.

During the proceedings, the senate made an important administrative appointment. Members nominated deputy registrar Babuji Samal to serve as a syndicate member, according to sources familiar with the decision-making process.

Leadership Emphasizes Autonomy and Transparency

Vice-Chancellor Geetanjali Dash presided over the historic session and expressed optimism about the senate's renewed role. "The reintroduction of the senate will strengthen institutional autonomy, enhance transparency, and promote shared responsibility among all stakeholders," Dash stated emphatically. She highlighted how this governance structure supports collaborative decision-making in university affairs.

New Academic Initiatives and Achievements

Dash used the platform to showcase several recent accomplishments and future plans for the university:

  • Three new certificate programs launched under the Skill India Mission:
    1. Marine Bioresource Management
    2. AI and Machine Learning Essentials (with Python programming)
    3. Entrepreneurship and Start-up Management through the university's incubation center
  • Four-Year Integrated Teacher Education Programme scheduled to commence from the 2026-27 academic year
  • Research excellence demonstrated through 111 projects worth ₹36.50 crore undertaken over the past five years with support from various funding agencies
  • Faculty achievements including 19 secured patents and 730 published research papers during the same period

Substantial Infrastructure Investment

The vice-chancellor also revealed significant financial support for campus development. The state government has sanctioned ₹74.50 crore for major infrastructure projects, indicating strong governmental commitment to enhancing the university's physical facilities and learning environment.

This senate meeting marks a turning point for Berhampur University as it reestablishes formal governance structures while pursuing ambitious academic and infrastructure goals. The combination of legislative support, administrative appointments, and educational initiatives suggests a renewed phase of growth for this Odisha-based institution.
