In a significant humanitarian initiative, Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) has formally adopted Gaggar village in Ajnala, which was severely impacted by recent floods. The university has launched a comprehensive winter relief drive to support the affected families as the cold season sets in.
University Steps In for Holistic Rehabilitation
The adoption and relief effort was officially launched by GNDU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Jaspal Singh Sandhu during a ceremony held in the village itself on Tuesday. The initiative, titled 'Ghar Ghar Andar, Sardi Ton Bachan Di Tayari', aims to provide immediate and sustained assistance to the flood-hit community. Prof. Sandhu emphasized that the university is committed to standing with the villagers not just for immediate relief but for their long-term rehabilitation and development.
The relief drive was kickstarted with the distribution of 250 blankets to provide warmth during the harsh winter. However, the university's plan extends far beyond this initial gesture. The project involves faculty members, research scholars, and students from various departments who will work together to address the multifaceted challenges faced by the village.
Multi-Departmental Support for Village Upliftment
A dedicated team of university officials, including Dean of Students Prof. Parminder Singh, and Dr. Baljinder Singh Bal, the coordinator of the National Service Scheme (NSS), is overseeing the project. The initiative will leverage the expertise of different university departments to create a holistic support system.
The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences will conduct medical camps and provide essential medicines. The Department of Food Science and Technology will distribute nutritious food kits to ensure food security. Furthermore, experts from the Department of Geography will study the flood patterns and suggest preventive measures, while the Department of Social Work will focus on community mobilization and psychosocial support.
The university has also pledged to help repair damaged homes and community infrastructure, ensuring the village rebuilds stronger. Educational support for children and skill development programs for youth are also part of the long-term blueprint.
