In a landmark achievement for Gauhati University, a faculty member has broken new ground by joining the ranks of the Indian Air Force's National Cadet Corps. Hemen Kumar Kalita, an assistant professor in the Department of Physics, has been commissioned as a Flying Officer, becoming the first academic from the university to hold this prestigious position while actively serving.
A Pioneering Achievement for Gauhati University
This accomplishment marks a significant milestone in the university's long-standing partnership with the NCC. The university officially confirmed that Kalita is the first Associate NCC Officer from the NCC Air Force Wing at GU to attain the rank of Flying Officer. His success brings considerable distinction and pride to the institution, highlighting its commitment to fostering discipline and national service beyond the conventional academic sphere.
The Rigorous Path to Commissioning
Hemen Kumar Kalita's journey to his new rank was demanding. He successfully completed the intensive Pre-Commission Training at the Air Force Station Tambaram in Chennai. According to a university statement released on Wednesday, he demonstrated exceptional discipline, leadership, and professional competence throughout the challenging program.
The formal ceremony, known as the pipping ceremony, where he officially received his Flying Officer rank, was conducted with full IAF traditions at AFS Tambaram on December 26. This event symbolized the culmination of months of rigorous preparation and the beginning of his official duties as a commissioned officer.
Excellence in Training and Future Responsibilities
Kalita's performance during the training was outstanding. He secured an 'A' grade for his overall performance, standing out among his peers. In his remarks, Flying Officer Kalita expressed his happiness at being part of a batch of 29 trainees who completed the Senior Division Pre-Commission Training Course at Tambaram and were commissioned to serve in NCC units across India.
In his new role, Flying Officer Kalita will be responsible for mentoring and motivating NCC cadets at Gauhati University. His primary mission will be to guide these young cadets and inspire them to consider careers in the Indian Armed Forces, effectively bridging the gap between academia and national defence.
This unique dual role of a university professor and an IAF NCC officer sets a powerful example for students, demonstrating that dedication to nation-building can seamlessly coexist with a passion for education and research.
