The Indian Institute of Technology Indore has demonstrated remarkable growth in student preferences across its undergraduate engineering programs, according to the recently released Joint Implementation Committee (JIC) 2025 choice-count data. The institute recorded substantial increases across nearly all disciplines, with computing-led courses continuing to capture the highest interest among aspiring engineers.
Computing Programs Lead the Charge
Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) emerged as the undisputed frontrunner, recording an impressive 23,410 choices in 2025 compared to 20,763 last year. This represents a significant 12.75 percent year-on-year increase, reinforcing the sustained demand for careers in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, software engineering, and deep-tech innovation.
Close on its heels, Mathematics and Computing demonstrated equally robust growth with a 12.76 percent surge. The program climbed from 14,659 choices in 2024 to 16,529 this year, benefiting from rising interest in data science, quantitative research, cryptography, financial engineering, and algorithm-driven roles that combine mathematical rigor with computational applications.
Traditional Engineering Branches Show Strong Performance
While computing disciplines dominated the preference charts, traditional engineering branches at IIT Indore also posted impressive numbers. Electrical Engineering maintained its strong relevance with an 11.47 percent jump, increasing from 16,827 to 18,757 choices. The branch continues to attract students aiming for careers in semiconductor systems, signal processing, power engineering, and embedded electronics.
Mechanical Engineering witnessed a healthy 9.49 percent growth, rising from 15,001 to 16,426 choices, while Civil Engineering saw a notable 10.85 percent increase, climbing from 11,839 to 13,124 choices. This steady growth in core engineering domains signals sustained interest supported by expanding opportunities in manufacturing, infrastructure development, sustainability, and research-led industrial applications.
Emerging and Specialized Programs Gain Traction
The 2025 data reveals growing student interest in specialized engineering fields. Engineering Physics recorded a 10.85 percent increase, rising from 8,256 in 2024 to 9,152 choice counts, reflecting rising inclination toward physics-based research fields such as quantum technologies, photonics, and advanced instrumentation.
Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science grew by 9.87 percent, from 8,995 to 9,883 choices, underscoring the relevance of materials engineering in sectors ranging from aerospace to nanotechnology. Chemical Engineering registered a steady 7.73 percent rise, with choices increasing from 11,885 to 12,804.
A notable highlight in this year's data is the positive response to the renamed Space Science and Engineering program. Formerly known as Space Sciences and Engineering, which received 9,664 choices in 2024, the program under its updated nomenclature attracted 10,998 choices this year, indicating enhanced visibility among aspirants drawn to space technology, satellite systems, and astrophysics-driven engineering roles.
The comprehensive JIC 2025 data clearly indicates that IIT Indore has strengthened its position across disciplines, with growth patterns that align perfectly with both national and global shifts in engineering education and industry demand. The institute's diverse program portfolio continues to resonate with student aspirations while addressing evolving technological landscapes.
