IIT Kanpur Launches Second Admission Cycle for Nine Online Postgraduate Programs
The Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT-K) has officially announced the commencement of the second admission cycle for its Online Postgraduate Programs through the Office of Outreach Activities. This initiative represents a significant expansion of the institute's digital education offerings, providing flexible learning opportunities for both working professionals and fresh graduates.
Comprehensive Program Portfolio Across Emerging Disciplines
The second admission cycle will feature up to nine Senate-approved programs spanning multiple cutting-edge disciplines. The M.Tech (Online) programs include:
- Wireless Networks & Machine Learning
- RF Engineering
- Microelectronics & VLSI
- Construction Engineering & Project Management
- Sustainable Energy Technologies
- Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning
- Smart Grid
In addition to these technical programs, IIT-K will offer an MSc (Online) program in Economics & Data Analytics and a PG Diploma (Online) in Cyber Security. The program durations are structured to accommodate different learning paces: M.Tech and M.Sc programs can be completed within two to four years, while the PG Diploma program offers a shorter completion timeline of one to two years.

Professor Vimal Kumar, Professor-in-Charge of the Office of Outreach Activities at IIT-K, emphasized the institute's commitment to creating accessible, high-quality educational pathways. "The second cycle of admissions introduces an expanded portfolio of programs that enables learners to pursue flexible online education while gaining access to world-class academic expertise," he stated.
Professor Kumar further explained that these programs are specifically designed to help learners strengthen their technical capabilities, broaden their professional perspectives, and prepare themselves for leadership roles in critical and emerging sectors of the economy. The curriculum has been developed with industry relevance and future workforce needs in mind.
Eligibility Criteria and Admission Pathways
The programs are open to a diverse range of applicants, including both working professionals and recent graduates. To be eligible, applicants must have achieved a minimum CPI of 5.5 or 55% marks in their qualifying degree.
Admissions will be considered through multiple pathways:
- Valid national-level examination scores, such as GATE or JAM, meeting department-specific cut-offs
- IIT-K's online entrance test
Notably, the requirement for the online entrance test may be waived for professionals with five or more years of relevant experience. This exemption also extends to candidates who are nominated or sponsored by government or defense organizations, reflecting IIT Kanpur's commitment to making advanced education more accessible to experienced professionals.
