In a significant move to bridge the gap between academia and industry, IT behemoth Infosys has officially launched a groundbreaking apprenticeship programme in collaboration with Alva's College in Moodbidri, Mangaluru. This initiative, now approved under the Apprenticeship Act, allows selected students to earn a stipend while studying and secures them a job upon successful completion of the course.
A Pioneering Partnership Takes Flight
The programme marks a national first, with Alva's College being chosen as the inaugural partner following a successful pilot project conducted in the previous academic year. The pilot involved 22 students from BCom, BBA, and BCA streams during the 2024-25 academic year. Encouraged by the outcomes, Infosys has now rolled out the full-scale programme, currently involving 75 selected students from the institute.
Kurian, Principal of Alva's College, Moodbidri, highlighted the company's commitment, stating, "Infosys has completely set up a dedicated computer lab on our campus to undertake this programme." The selection process is rigorous, with students chosen based on their performance in a dedicated entrance exam.
Earn While You Learn: The Programme Structure
The apprenticeship is designed to integrate seamlessly with the students' academic schedule. After attending their regular college classes, the apprentices work in a business process management role from 3 PM to 10 PM. They are provided with the flexibility to work from home during public holidays.
The financial and professional benefits are substantial. Each apprentice receives a monthly stipend of Rs 12,500, which helps fund their education. Beyond the monetary support, they earn academic credits and a formal work experience certificate from Infosys. The most compelling aspect is a job guarantee with Infosys upon completion of the course.
Future Prospects and Student Flexibility
Principal Kurian elaborated on the career pathway, noting, "Those who took up the apprenticeship during the pilot project are now placed in the same firm. There is a high chance that all who undergo this process will secure full-time jobs." However, the programme is not binding; students who are not interested in joining Infosys after graduation have the freedom to opt out after completing the course.
This model represents a transformative approach to higher education in India, directly linking practical, paid industry exposure with academic curriculum. It not only enhances employability but also provides crucial financial support to students, creating a sustainable win-win scenario for both the corporate and educational sectors.
