In a landmark achievement for a state engineering college in West Bengal, a final-year student from Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College has secured a staggering annual employment package of Rs 1 crore. This prestigious offer, typically associated with top-tier institutions like Jadavpur University, marks a historic first for his college.
From Farm to Fortune: Suman Bera's Remarkable Journey
The student at the heart of this success story is Suman Bera, a resident of Barbashi village in the Kharagpur II Block of West Midnapore. Bera, who is in his fourth year in the Information Technology department (2022-2026 batch), received the offer from the global professional networking giant, LinkedIn. He is set to be posted at the company's office in Bengaluru and is expected to join in July, following the declaration of his final results in June.
"My father has grown too old to farm any longer. This offer has breathed a new lease of life in him. I am happy," said an elated Bera, highlighting the personal significance of this achievement for his family. Born to Achal Kumar Bera, Suman has consistently been a high achiever. He completed his Class X from Barbashi High School in 2020 with an impressive 96.28% and his Class XII from Midnapore Collegiate School with 94.8%. The same year, he cracked the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE) with a rank just over 2,400.
The Path to a Crore: Internship to Pre-Placement Offer
Bera's path to this crore-rupee package began with a strategic internship. In 2024, LinkedIn advertised an online opening for an internship, for which Bera applied. After clearing an online test, he worked at the company's Bengaluru office for three months from May to July 2024. His performance during this internship paved the way for the full-time offer, which arrived just a couple of days ago. "I am thrilled, indeed," Bera told sources, reflecting on the culmination of his hard work.
The college administration expressed immense pride and surprise at the unprecedented placement. College principal Amitabha Roy described Bera as "always meritorious" and noted, "Our students bag packages of Rs 25 lakh to Rs 35 lakh. But the offer that Bera has received seems surreal." Aditya Kumar Samanta, the Head of the IT Department, called it a milestone for the institution.
A Wave of High Placements at the College
Bera's record-breaking offer was not the only significant placement from the college. In another notable achievement, Tania Banerjee, a final-year Computer Science student, secured an annual package of Rs 56 lakh from tech behemoth Microsoft. She is slated to be posted in Hyderabad. These back-to-back high-value offers underscore the growing placement prowess and talent emerging from state engineering colleges beyond the traditional metropolitan hubs.
The dual success stories of Suman Bera and Tania Banerjee signal a positive shift in the recruitment landscape, where dedicated students from institutions across West Bengal are being recognized and rewarded with top-tier compensation by global technology leaders, setting a new benchmark for future batches.
