Karnataka DCE Launches Early Admission Drive for 2026-27 Academic Year
The Department of Collegiate Education (DCE) in Karnataka has officially launched a comprehensive admission campaign for the 2026-27 academic year. This strategic initiative is designed to significantly increase student enrolment in government first-grade colleges across the state, with a primary goal of improving the gross enrolment ratio in higher education.
Campaign Timing and Objectives
The campaign is scheduled to take place this month, strategically timed ahead of the final Pre-University (PU) examinations. This early approach aims to attract students proactively, ensuring they consider government degree colleges as a viable option for their higher education journey. Officials have emphasized that the initiative targets a broad demographic, focusing on increasing student intake in urban, rural, and economically backward regions to expand access to quality education.
Addressing Concerns and Setting Targets
In a move to ensure transparency and accountability, the DCE has raised concerns about some colleges engaging in fake admissions to artificially inflate campus strength. To combat this, the department has issued a stern warning: if the dropout rate in any stream or course exceeds 25%, the principal of the concerned college will be held directly responsible. This measure underscores the commitment to maintaining integrity in the admission process.
Colleges have been given clear targets to meet. They must ensure that at least 75% of their sanctioned intake is filled for the 2026-27 academic year. Additionally, institutions that achieved more than 75% enrolment in the 2025-26 academic year are instructed to increase admissions by at least another 10% over the previous year, pushing for continuous improvement.
Operational Directives for Colleges
To facilitate the campaign, principals of government first-grade colleges have been directed to visit all government pre-university colleges allotted to them by February 20. During these visits, principals are required to brief eligible PU students on the courses offered in government degree colleges and highlight related employment opportunities, making a compelling case for enrolment.
The DCE has also mandated several organizational steps:
- Every college must constitute an admissions committee to oversee the process.
- Faculty members are to be allocated nearby PU colleges for outreach efforts.
- Campaign-related programmes must be conducted on schedule to maximize impact.
Strengthening Oversight and Accountability
To enhance oversight during admissions, the department has mandated the presence of permanent faculty members on a rotational basis throughout the admission process. This measure aims to prevent malpractices and ensure a fair, transparent system that benefits students and upholds educational standards.
By launching this early admission campaign, the Karnataka DCE is taking proactive steps to address enrolment challenges, promote higher education accessibility, and set a precedent for accountability in the state's collegiate system.
