Kasturba Medical College Manipal Gains Singapore Medical Council Recognition
KMC Manipal Recognized by Singapore Medical Council

In a significant development for Indian medical education, Kasturba Medical College (KMC) in Manipal has received official recognition from the Singapore government. The prestigious institution, a constituent unit of the Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), has been included in the list of eight newly approved overseas medical schools by the Singapore Medical Council (SMC). This recognition is scheduled to take effect from February 1, marking a milestone for the college.

Global Recognition and Implications

The inclusion of KMC Manipal places it among an elite group of 120 globally reputed medical schools from countries including Australia, Ireland, Malaysia, China, the United Kingdom, and the United States. This recognition underscores the high standards of medical education and training offered at the institution.

Assessment Criteria and Review Process

The Singapore Medical Council periodically reviews overseas medical qualifications to ensure that training standards are comparable with those in Singapore. The assessment process considers several critical factors such as academic quality, language of instruction, clinical exposure, and the performance of graduates in professional practice. This rigorous evaluation ensures that foreign-trained medical doctors applying to practise in Singapore have received education and training on par with Singapore's own medical schools.

Future Opportunities for Students and Graduates

From 2026 onwards, aspiring medical students can apply to KMC Manipal with the assurance that the MBBS qualification will be recognized for medical registration in Singapore. Importantly, graduates from KMC Manipal, regardless of their nationality and year of graduation, will be eligible to seek registration with the SMC. However, they must fulfill all regulatory and supervisory requirements as stipulated by the council.

Leadership Reactions and Institutional Pride

Dr HS Ballal, the Pro-Chancellor of MAHE, expressed his pride in this achievement, stating, "As the longest-serving official of MAHE, I am proud to see KMC Manipal recognised by the Singapore Medical Council." This sentiment was echoed by Lt Gen (Dr) MD Venkatesh, Vice-Chancellor of MAHE, who welcomed the announcement, saying, "This achievement not only elevates the international stature of KMC, but also opens new global pathways for our graduates."

Dr Sharath Rao, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Health Sciences) at MAHE, highlighted the uniqueness of this recognition, noting, "Being the only Indian medical school to be included among the newly recognised institutions underscores the strength of our academic framework, clinical training standards, and global relevance." This distinction sets KMC Manipal apart as a leader in medical education not just in India, but on the international stage.

Broader Impact on Medical Education in India

This recognition by the Singapore Medical Council is expected to have a positive ripple effect on the perception of Indian medical education globally. It validates the quality and rigor of the programs offered at KMC Manipal and may encourage other international bodies to consider similar recognitions for Indian institutions. For students, this opens up enhanced career opportunities and mobility in the global healthcare sector.
