Lucknow University Students Voice Outrage Over Insect-Infested Mess Food at Bhabha Hostel

Students residing at the Homi Jehangir Bhabha Hostel, part of Lucknow University's second campus, have expressed deep resentment and frustration over the deplorable quality of food being served in the hostel mess. The situation has escalated to a point where students are now publicly protesting against what they describe as a severe health hazard.

Allegations of Insects in Meals and Unhygienic Conditions

Hostel inmates have come forward with alarming allegations, stating that insects have been found in their meals on multiple occasions. Shubham Kharwar, one of the affected students, shared his distressing experience. "We discovered insects in our meals, and when we raised our concerns, the mess staff responded in a casual manner. This is not merely negligence; it poses a direct threat to our health and well-being," he emphasized.

In addition to the insect infestation, students have highlighted the poor condition of utensils used in the mess. Virat Shekhar, another student, pointed out, "The plates and glasses are often greasy and visibly dirty. There are instances where food is served in utensils with noticeable stains. How can we be expected to consume food under such unhygienic conditions?"

Repeated Complaints Ignored by Administration

The students have reported that their repeated complaints regarding these issues have gone unheard by the hostel and university administration. Mohit Kumar, a hostel resident, expressed his frustration, stating, "We are paying our mess fees regularly, yet we are being forced to compromise on basic hygiene and food quality. We are paying for proper food facilities, not for insects, fungus, and expired items. The administration must take immediate responsibility and address these concerns."

The students' grievances include:

  • Finding insects and other contaminants in their meals.
  • Using unhygienic and dirty utensils on a routine basis.
  • Lack of response from mess staff and administration despite multiple complaints.
  • Feeling that their health is at risk due to poor food quality and hygiene standards.

Administration's Response and Future Steps

In response to the growing outcry, Chief Provost Anoop Kumar Singh has acknowledged the issue. He stated, "The matter is being taken very seriously, and necessary steps will be initiated to ensure that hygiene and food quality standards are strictly maintained in the mess. We are committed to addressing the students' concerns promptly."

This incident has sparked a broader conversation about the quality of hostel facilities in educational institutions across India. Students are calling for:

  1. Regular inspections of mess kitchens and food supplies.
  2. Implementation of strict hygiene protocols.
  3. Transparent communication between students and administration regarding food-related issues.
  4. Accountability from mess staff and management in maintaining food safety standards.

The situation at Lucknow University's Bhabha Hostel serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining high standards in student accommodations, particularly in terms of food safety and hygiene. As the administration works to resolve these issues, students hope for a swift and effective response to restore their trust and ensure their well-being.
