In a significant academic expansion, the University of Madras has unveiled plans to introduce its first-ever interdisciplinary postgraduate programme, a Master of Science (MS) in Science, Technology and National Security, starting from the next academic year. This innovative degree marks a strategic collaboration between two unlikely departments: Defence and Strategic Studies and Theoretical Physics.
A Pioneering Programme for Modern Security Challenges
The new MS degree is designed to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of contemporary security landscapes intertwined with cutting-edge technology. Rita John, the Registrar of the University of Madras, explained that the curriculum will provide exposure to critical and emerging domains. "This degree will give an understanding of broader areas of security and strategies. The candidates will get exposure to areas such as quantum computing, design thinking, AI tools, and space and underwater domains," she stated.
The programme's interdisciplinary nature aims to bridge the gap between pure scientific research and its application in national security frameworks, preparing graduates for specialized roles in government, research, and the private sector.
Expanding Access: Online Degrees and Special Diplomas
Alongside the flagship MS programme, the university is set to broaden its digital footprint. Seven new online degree programmes have received approval from the University Grants Commission (UGC) and will launch concurrently. These include:
- Bachelor of Commerce (BCom)
- Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA)
- BA in French
- Master of Commerce (MCom)
- MA in English
- MA in Anthropology
- MA in Journalism
In a move supporting skill development for ex-servicemen, the Department of Defence and Strategic Studies is planning a dedicated diploma programme in Strategic Studies for 'Agniveers' – individuals who complete a four-year service tenure in the Indian Army. The Institute of Distance Education (IDE) and the Department of Adult and Continuing Education will also roll out new diploma and certificate programmes, including one in geriatric care.
International Collaborations and Faculty Exchange
The university is also strengthening its global ties. It has received an invitation for a winter programme in 2026 from the prestigious University of Melbourne. Five selected students from various departments will attend with partial financial assistance from the Australian institution. Furthermore, the upcoming academic year will see the university host 15 professors from foreign universities across its departments, fostering an international academic environment.
These initiatives collectively signal the University of Madras's proactive approach in evolving its academic portfolio to meet future-ready educational demands, focusing on security, technology, accessibility, and global engagement.
