Mangalore University's ambitious plan to establish a Centre of Excellence in generative artificial intelligence and deep learning laboratories at its Mangalagangothri campus is progressing steadily, with the facility expected to become operational within the next year. Construction and Funding Details

The construction of a two-storey building for the centre has already commenced a few weeks ago, with funding secured through the Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM-USHA). A substantial allocation of Rs 7.69 crore from the PM-USHA grant is being utilized for this project. Officials have confirmed that the construction is scheduled for completion by next March, ensuring a timely launch of the facility.

In addition to the construction funds, Mangalore University will invest an additional Rs 1 crore to procure state-of-the-art equipment for the centre. This procurement plan includes advanced tools and technologies essential for cutting-edge research and education in AI and deep learning.

Project Coordination and Location

B H Shekar, a senior faculty member in the Department of Computer Science at Mangalore University and the coordinator of this project, provided insights into the development. He mentioned that the construction is being executed by the Public Works Department, with the building being erected next to the Kaveri guest house on the campus. This strategic location enhances accessibility and integration with existing university facilities.

Focus Areas and Collaborations

According to Shekar, the centre will primarily focus on AI courses related to quantum computing, health, and social health. This interdisciplinary approach aims to address pressing societal challenges through technological innovation. Furthermore, the centre will collaborate with the Centre for Advanced Research in Environmental Radioactivity, also located on the campus, to support and enhance research activities.

Shekar emphasized that the facility is designed for broader data analysis work, enabling students from social work and other humanities streams to process and analyze data collected during their studies.
