PG Medical Admissions Face Major Schedule Overhaul After AIQ Round 3 Extension
The admission process for postgraduate medical courses across India has entered a critical phase with significant timeline adjustments. The crucial third round of the All India Quota (AIQ) system, which was originally scheduled to conclude by February 11th, has now received an official extension. The new deadline for joining AIQ seats has been pushed to February 13th, creating ripple effects throughout the entire admission ecosystem.
State Quota Process Delayed by Four Days
As a direct consequence of the AIQ extension, the state quota admission process will now commence four days later than initially planned. State quota joining, which was originally set for February 19th, has been rescheduled to begin on February 14th. This delay follows prolonged uncertainty surrounding whether the third AIQ round would even be conducted, as a related case remained pending before the Supreme Court of India.
The admission committee sources confirmed that the revised schedule became necessary to properly accommodate the extended AIQ joining deadline. This adjustment ensures that candidates who secure seats through the national quota have adequate time to complete their formalities before state-level processes begin.
Reduced Percentile Cut-offs Expand Candidate Pool
In a significant development earlier in the admission cycle, percentile cut-offs were substantially reduced to allow more candidates to participate. For the unreserved category, the cut-off was lowered to just 7 percentile, while for reserved categories it was set at 0 percentile. This strategic move dramatically expanded the pool of eligible candidates competing for postgraduate medical seats across the country.
The reduced percentile requirements have led to considerable reshuffling within the admission system. A total of 214 students who initially secured seats under the All India Quota subsequently vacated their state quota admissions. This domino effect has increased the number of vacant seats at the state level to nearly 900, with officials anticipating further vacancies once the third AIQ round concludes.
Additional Round Planned for Vacant Seats
Following the completion of the third round, admission authorities have confirmed that an additional round will be conducted specifically to fill seats that remain vacant. The entire admission process is now expected to conclude by February 28th, though this timeline remains subject to the fluid nature of the ongoing admission cycle.
The current situation highlights several important aspects of India's medical education admission system:
- Interdependence between national and state quota processes
- Impact of judicial proceedings on admission timelines
- Strategic use of percentile adjustments to optimize seat filling
- Significant candidate movement between quota systems
Medical education officials continue to monitor the situation closely as thousands of aspiring doctors await final admission decisions in this highly competitive process.
