Patna University Students Union Elections 2024: A Democratic Exercise for 20,000 Students
Patna University (PU) is set to witness a significant democratic process as nearly 20,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students, along with research scholars, prepare to cast their votes for the Patna University Students Union (PUSU) elections on February 28. According to official sources from the university, this electoral event marks a crucial moment for student representation and governance on campus.
Election Timeline and Key Dates
The electoral process follows a structured timeline designed to ensure transparency and fairness. The last elections were held on March 29 of the previous year, setting the stage for this year's renewed engagement. PU physics department head Shankar Kumar, appointed as the chief election officer by vice-chancellor Namita Singh, outlined the tentative plan. Nomination papers for the five key offices of the union—president, vice-president, general secretary, joint secretary, and treasurer—will be available for sale over four days starting February 11. Each nomination form will cost Rs 50 and will include a copy of the rules and regulations to guide candidates. Filled-in nomination papers must be submitted between February 16 and 18, followed by scrutiny on February 19. Candidates can withdraw their nominations on February 21, after which the final list of contestants will be published.
Voting and Results Schedule
On February 28, voting will take place at designated polling booths from 8 am to 2 pm, allowing students ample time to participate. The counting of votes will commence at 4 pm on the same day, with results expected to be announced late at night. To oversee the elections, PU development officer Khagendra Kumar has been appointed as the election advisor, while botany department head Birendra Prasad and commerce department teacher Nagendra Kumar Jha will serve as observers. In addition to the main offices, class representatives in colleges and postgraduate departments will be elected by the electorate of their respective constituencies. There will be one representative for every 1,000 students across different constituencies. All representatives, along with the five office bearers, will form the union cabinet, creating a comprehensive governance structure.
Contesting candidates are required to adhere to the model code of conduct prescribed in the statutes, which is based on the Lyngdoh Committee report. This framework aims to promote ethical campaigning and prevent malpractices, aligning with national guidelines for student union elections in India.
