Panaji: As part of the centenary celebrations of Mario Miranda, the Department of Posts unveiled a special philatelic tribute, including a commemorative cancellation and four-picture postcards dedicated to the legendary cartoonist. The event took place at the Kala Academy in Panaji, drawing a distinguished gathering of diplomats, cultural figures, artists, and admirers over the weekend.
Official Remarks on the Tribute
Senior Superintendent of Post Offices (SSPO), Goa Division, Anurag Nikhare, described the moment as “a matter of great pride and privilege,” emphasizing that Miranda’s “name is synonymous with creativity, humour and a deep, affectionate portrayal of Goa’s life.” Nikhare highlighted that philately is a powerful medium to preserve history, celebrate culture, and honour individuals who have made a lasting impact on society.
He further stated, “Department of Posts’ mandate is not just limited to mails, parcels and facilitation of banking and financial services, but we also promote, preserve and commemorate our cultural heritage, art and personalities. On this special occasion, Department of Posts is honoured to release the special cancellation and four-picture postcards dedicated to the birth centenary.”
Governor Visits Exhibition
Goa Governor Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju visited the exhibition on the centenary celebrations of the artist at the art gallery of the Kala Academy. The exhibition showcased Miranda’s iconic works, reflecting his deep connection with Goan life and culture.
The commemorative cancellation and postcards are now available for philatelists and admirers of Miranda’s art. This initiative by India Post aims to preserve the legacy of one of India’s most beloved cartoonists, whose work continues to inspire generations.
