Kolkata: The Bengal Police on Sunday arrested Mohammad Jasimuddin, a Trinamool Congress councillor of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), on charges of molestation and harassment of a minor girl. Jasimuddin, who represents Ward No. 39 in the Jorasanko area of central Kolkata, was taken into custody from his residence in the afternoon, police officials confirmed.
He has been booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, following a complaint lodged by the victim's family. The arrest led to tension in the locality, with residents expressing strong reactions. Police have since increased security measures in the area to maintain order.
Investigation Underway
Further investigation is ongoing, and authorities are collecting evidence related to the case. The identity of the victim has not been disclosed in accordance with Supreme Court directives on protecting the privacy of survivors in sexual assault cases.
