Annual Khush Foundation Awards Celebrate Academic Excellence in Agriculture

The Dr Gurdev Singh Khush Foundation for the Advancement of Agricultural Sciences held its prestigious annual award ceremony in Ludhiana, honoring outstanding contributions to agricultural education, research, and development. The event highlighted the Foundation's commitment to fostering talent and innovation in the agricultural sector.

Scholarships and Grants for Students and Faculty

A total of 72 GS Khush Merit Scholarships were awarded to exceptional undergraduate students from rural areas of Punjab. These students are enrolled at the eight constituent colleges of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) and Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), both located in Ludhiana. The scholarships aim to support academic excellence among students from underprivileged backgrounds.

In addition, five GS Khush Travel Grants were provided to faculty members and postgraduate students to facilitate their participation in international conferences, promoting global knowledge exchange. A merit scholarship was also granted to the top-performing student of PAU Model High School in Kaoni, Sri Muktsar Sahib, recognizing early academic achievement.

Prestigious Awards for Agricultural Scientists

The Dr Darshan Singh Brar Award in Agriculture–2026 was presented to Dr Tilak Raj Sharma, ICAR National Professor at the National Institute of Plant Biotechnology, IARI, New Delhi. He was honored for his over three decades of pioneering work in rice improvement, particularly in advancing molecular breeding for disease resistance and developing widely adopted rice varieties. The award included a plaque and a cash prize of Rs 3 lakh.

The Dr Darshan Singh Brar Young Scientist Award–2026 was awarded to Dr Buta Singh Dhillon, Senior Agronomist (Rice) at PAU. He was recognized for his significant contributions to rice production, nutrient and weed management, as well as his extension and teaching efforts. Dr Dhillon received a plaque and a cash prize of Rs 50,000.

The Award for Excellence in Communication was conferred on Dr Anil Kumar Sharma, Associate Director (TV) at PAU, for his outstanding work in agricultural communication through innovative and traditional media. He was awarded a plaque and Rs 50,000.

Focus on Diversification and Sustainable Growth

During the ceremony, Dr Jatinder Paul Singh Gill delivered a special lecture on the "Role of Livestock in Punjab Agriculture and Economy." He emphasized the growing importance of the livestock sector in enhancing farmers' income and advocated for integrated farming systems that combine crops and livestock.

In his remarks, Dr SS Johl stressed the need for diversifying Punjab agriculture towards animal husbandry and horticulture. Kahan Singh Pannu, former Director of Agriculture, Punjab, highlighted the importance of proactive measures to improve farmers' income and ensure agricultural sustainability.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Satbir Singh Gosal praised the Foundation's role in nurturing young talent, particularly students from rural backgrounds, and congratulated all awardees. He expressed gratitude for the Foundation's continued support to agricultural education and research.

In his address, Dr Gurdev Singh Khush congratulated all award recipients and appreciated the efforts of faculty members in mentoring students, underscoring the Foundation's mission to advance agricultural sciences through recognition and support.
