In a significant recognition of agricultural excellence, Shrirang Lad, a progressive farmer and prominent leader from the Parbhani district in Marathwada, has been honored with the prestigious Padma Shri award for 2026. This accolade celebrates his exceptional contributions to cotton research, which have transformed farming practices and enhanced livelihoods across the region and beyond.
From Humble Beginnings to Agricultural Pioneer
Hailing from a modest farming family in Malsona village, Shrirang Lad, affectionately known as Dada, has dedicated over four decades to innovative experiments aimed at improving cotton productivity. His journey from a small-scale farmer to a nationally recognized figure underscores the power of perseverance and scientific inquiry in agriculture.
Innovative Techniques Revolutionizing Cotton Cultivation
At 80 years old, Lad has developed a comprehensive and scientific approach to cotton farming that includes:

These innovations have made cotton cultivation more profitable, directly benefiting the farming community by increasing efficiency and reducing costs.
A Vision for Farmer Welfare and Suicide Prevention
Upon receiving the Padma Shri, Lad expressed his gratitude and hope for the future. "I am happy with the honor bestowed upon me. It will spread awareness about cotton cultivation technology among many. I hope cotton producer farmers will benefit from my work and unfortunate incidents like farmer suicides will be avoided," he stated in an interview. His words highlight a deep commitment to not only advancing agricultural techniques but also addressing critical social issues like farmer distress.
Leadership and Academic Recognition
