PAU Scientist Dr Sandeep Singh Wins Award for Eco-Friendly Pest Control
PAU's Dr Sandeep Singh honoured for eco-friendly pest tech

In a significant recognition for sustainable agricultural innovation, a leading scientist from Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has been honoured with a prestigious national award. Dr Sandeep Singh, Principal Entomologist (Fruits) at PAU's Department of Fruit Science, was conferred the 'Excellence in Environmental Research Award' for his groundbreaking work in eco-friendly pest control and environmental conservation.

Award Ceremony and Distinguished Presenters

The award was presented by the Abraham Verghese Insect and Nature (AVIAN) Trust in Bengaluru on December 14, 2025. The honour was bestowed upon Dr Singh by two eminent figures in the field: Dr JP Singh, Plant Protection Advisor to the Government of India, and Dr CA Viraktamath, a renowned octogenarian entomologist. The ceremony highlighted Dr Sandeep Singh's dual contributions to both agricultural science and heritage conservation.

Innovations in Integrated Pest Management (IPM)

The award specifically acknowledges Dr Singh's pioneering research in developing eco-friendly insect-pest management technologies for fruit crops. His work has led to the creation of practical and effective IPM modules that reduce reliance on chemical pesticides. Key innovations recognised include:

  • PAU Fruit Fly Trap: A targeted solution for a major horticultural pest.
  • Termite Trap and Chaffer Beetle Trap: Specific devices for soil and foliage pests.
  • IPM protocols for litchi fruit borer, guava fruit borer, and fruit sucking moth: Comprehensive strategies for protecting high-value fruit crops.

These technologies empower farmers with sustainable tools to protect their yields while safeguarding the ecosystem.

Conservation of Historical and Environmental Heritage

Beyond the farm, the award also celebrates Dr Singh's dedicated efforts in environmental stewardship. He has played a crucial role in the conservation and rejuvenation of centuries-old historical trees at various gurdwaras across India. This work goes beyond mere horticulture, promoting environmental heritage and biodiversity at sites of deep cultural and spiritual significance. His efforts ensure that these living monuments continue to thrive for future generations.

The recognition from the AVIAN Trust underscores the vital intersection of agricultural science, environmental sustainability, and cultural preservation. Dr Sandeep Singh's work at PAU exemplifies how scientific innovation can address practical farming challenges while contributing to broader national goals of ecological balance and heritage conservation.
