Historic Ashok Chakra for India's Space Pioneer Shubhanshu Shukla

In a momentous announcement on the eve of the 77th Republic Day, the Defence Ministry revealed that Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla has been awarded the Ashok Chakra, India's highest peacetime gallantry award. This prestigious honor recognizes his groundbreaking contributions to space exploration and his exceptional service to the nation.

Trailblazing Journey to the International Space Station

Shukla made history by becoming the first Indian astronaut to reach the International Space Station (ISS) during the Axiom-4 mission in June 2025. His landmark 18-day mission marked a significant milestone for India's space program, following in the footsteps of Rakesh Sharma, who became the first Indian in space in 1984. During his time aboard the ISS, Shukla conducted over 60 complex scientific experiments, demonstrating remarkable expertise and dedication.

Distinguished Career and Future Prospects

As a qualified test pilot with the Indian Air Force, Shukla boasts over 2,000 hours of flying experience on various aircraft, including the MiG-29, Jaguar, and Sukhoi Su-30MKI. The Defence Ministry extended its heartfelt congratulations to Shukla, stating that the Ashok Chakra stands as a testament to his exceptional courage, dedication, and selfless service to the nation. The Indian Air Force also praised his achievement on social media, highlighting his exceptional operational excellence and mission readiness.
