Six Artists Exit US Independence 250 Festival Over Politics

As the United States prepares to celebrate the 250th anniversary of its independence, multiple artists have withdrawn from performing at the Freedom 250 festival. The nonprofit event is scheduled to take place on the National Mall in Washington DC from June 25 to July 10, 2026. However, several artists have pulled out, claiming they were unaware of the political affiliations behind the celebration.

Artists Who Withdrew

Six artists have decided not to participate in the Freedom 250 event: Young MC, Morris Day, The Commodores, Milli Vanilli, Poison lead Bret Michaels, and country singer Martina McBride. While the performers allege a distinct association with the Republican Party, the organizer has denied ties with President Donald J. Trump but respected the artists' decisions, according to the BBC.

Freedom 250 Background

Freedom 250, launched by Trump's administration, has organized events across the country aimed at uniting Americans ahead of the nation's semiquincentennial. Spokesperson Rachel Reiser stated to USA Today: "Freedom 250 is focused on our signature celebrations and events that honor our history and engage all Americans — welcoming all who share our goal of commemorating this milestone in a way that uplifts and unites America."

Artists' Statements

Young MC wrote on Facebook on May 27: "The artists were never told about any political involvement with the event. And despite the claims by the organizers that the event is non-partisan, SPIN magazine describes it as Trump-backed. I hope to perform in D.C. in the near future at an event that is not so politically charged."

Morris Day simply stated it would be a "no" from him. Milli Vanilli claimed in an interview with the Associated Press that they were not contacted for the event. Martina McBride said she was misled, believing it was non-partisan. The Commodores declared they will not affiliate their voice with any party.
