Zelenskyy Awards Hero of Ukraine Titles, Gives Housing

In a significant ceremony held in the Ukrainian capital, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy honoured the nation's defenders by bestowing its highest state award and addressing the critical need for housing for military personnel and their families. The event underscored the government's ongoing commitment to supporting those on the front lines of the conflict with Russia.

Highest Honours for Seven Brave Defenders

President Zelenskyy personally conferred the prestigious title of 'Hero of Ukraine' upon seven members of the Security and Defence Forces. This award, the highest state honour in the country, was presented on Thursday, May 23, 2024, at the historic Mariinsky Palace in Kyiv. The recipients were recognised for their exceptional personal courage and outstanding service in protecting Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The honoured personnel came from various branches of the defence apparatus, including the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine, the State Special Communications Service, and the State Border Guard Service. Each individual's actions, often conducted under extreme danger, were highlighted as pivotal contributions to the national defence effort.

Housing Certificates for Families of the Fallen

Alongside the awards ceremony, a deeply symbolic and practical gesture was made towards the families of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. President Zelenskyy presented housing certificates to the families of servicemen who were posthumously awarded the 'Hero of Ukraine' title. This initiative is part of the government's 'You Are Not Alone' project, specifically the 'Housing for Heroes' programme.

The programme aims to provide concrete support by ensuring that the families of fallen heroes have a permanent place to live. During the event, the President handed over certificates for apartments in a new building located in the Darnytskyi district of Kyiv. He emphasised that the state has a fundamental duty to take care of the families whose loved ones gave their lives for Ukraine's freedom.

A Pledge of Continued State Support

In his address, President Zelenskyy connected the act of awarding heroes with the broader responsibility of the state. He stated that true gratitude must be demonstrated through tangible actions and systemic support. The provision of housing is a key component of this promise, offering stability and security to those left behind.

"We must do everything to ensure that every family of our defenders feels that the state is with them," Zelenskyy remarked. He further detailed that the work on providing housing is continuous, with ongoing construction projects and a commitment to expanding the programme to cover more families in need across various regions of Ukraine.

The ceremony concluded with the President expressing his profound gratitude to all Ukrainian defenders, both living and fallen. He reiterated that the bravery of these individuals forms the unbreakable foundation of the nation's resilience. This event not only celebrated extraordinary valour but also reinforced the social contract between the Ukrainian state and its protectors, promising that their sacrifices will be met with lasting honour and substantive care for their families.
