Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao Discuss Water Conservation with Maharashtra Chief Minister

Bollywood icon Aamir Khan, accompanied by filmmaker Kiran Rao, held a significant meeting with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday. The discussion centered on the initiatives and ongoing activities of the Paani Foundation, the non-governmental organization founded by Khan that is dedicated to addressing water scarcity and promoting water conservation in rural areas across the state.

Positive Collaboration for Water Security

Kiran Rao, who actively participates in the foundation's work, expressed optimism about the collaboration. "It's for Paani Foundation... We are working very closely with the government, and the work has been going very well... We are working across Maharashtra. The meeting was very positive and productive," Rao stated, highlighting the constructive nature of the engagement with state authorities.

Focus on the 'Pan-Maharashtra Farmer Cup' and El Nino Preparedness

The meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Fadnavis in Mumbai, specifically addressed the Paani Foundation's 'Pan-Maharashtra Farmer Cup' initiative. This program aims to enhance water literacy among farmers and villagers through community-driven efforts. Fadnavis emphasized the critical importance of water conservation, particularly in light of climate predictions.

"Various climate research institutions have indicated that the El Nino phenomenon may be experienced this year. Thus, water conservation planning should be undertaken assuming that the state may receive around 80 per cent of its normal rainfall," Fadnavis noted in a social media post following the meeting.

Government Support and Strategic Directions

The Chief Minister underscored the foundation's impactful contributions to water conservation in Maharashtra and outlined several key directives to bolster its efforts:

  • Government departments were instructed to provide full support to the Paani Foundation and ensure necessary mechanisms are in place.
  • The Soil and Water Conservation Department will be integrated with the foundation's statewide water conservation activities.
  • Confidence was expressed that farmers and villagers would become more water-literate through the foundation's initiatives this year.

"The partnership between the Government of Maharashtra and the foundation will further strengthen the vision of a water-secure Maharashtra," Fadnavis added, reinforcing the commitment to collaborative action.

Broad Participation and Future Implications

Senior government officials were also present at the meeting, indicating the high-level attention being given to water security issues. This engagement marks a continued effort to leverage public-private partnerships in tackling environmental challenges, with the Paani Foundation playing a pivotal role in mobilizing community participation and awareness across rural Maharashtra.
