Aamir Khan's 'Sitaare Zameen Par' Makes Streaming Debut on SonyLIV
In a significant development for digital entertainment, Aamir Khan's acclaimed sports comedy-drama 'Sitaare Zameen Par' is finally set to arrive on a major streaming platform. This move comes nearly a full year after the film's initial theatrical release in June 2025, which saw it become a major box office success, earning over Rs 250 crore across India.
From YouTube Pay-Per-View to Mainstream Streaming
Following its theatrical run, Aamir Khan, who also produced the film, opted for an innovative and unconventional distribution model for its digital release. Rather than immediately licensing it to a traditional OTT service, the film was made available on Khan's personal YouTube channel through a pay-per-view system. Viewers could access the movie by paying approximately Rs 100 per view, a strategy Khan described as creating his "private cinema chain" in every home and pocket.
"I got good offers from OTT channels. But I don't want those Rs100-125 crore from OTT channels. I want to earn Rs 100 from my audience. I prefer that more," Aamir Khan explained to PTI at the time, highlighting his desire to test new approaches to digital distribution while enhancing accessibility.
SonyLIV Secures Exclusive Streaming Rights
Now, the film is transitioning to mainstream streaming, with SonyLIV announcing it will host the premiere. The streaming portal has emphasized that this debut represents a significant milestone for their platform, as 'Sitaare Zameen Par' will become the first Hindi theatrical film to make its exclusive streaming debut on SonyLIV.
This strategic shift marks the culmination of Khan's experimental distribution phase, bringing the movie to a broader audience through a established subscription-based service after its unique pay-per-view run.
