Abhay Mahajan Reflects on Artistic Integrity and Career Evolution
Actor Abhay Mahajan, known for his roles in acclaimed projects like Pitchers, Shantit Kranti, Gachchi, and Ashleel Udyog Mitra Mandal, opens up about his professional journey and artistic philosophy. In his upcoming film Trijya, Mahajan portrays an artistically inclined young man navigating life in a big city while working as a reporter for a local publication, a role that resonates with his own experiences.
College Theatre as a Foundation for Acting
During a recent visit to his alma mater, the Brihan Maharashtra College of Commerce (BMCC) in Pune, Mahajan emphasized the pivotal role his college years played in shaping his career. "I acted in plays during school, but it was at BMCC where I gained large-scale exposure," he recalled. He was part of the play Cycle, which won the prestigious Purushottam Karandak award, leading to 50 performances. "This experience taught me that acting is a collective effort and helped develop the sensibility required for the profession," Mahajan added.
He highlighted how his theatre group, which included talents like Nipun Dharmadhikari, Alok Rajwade, Amey Wagh, Akshay Tanksale, and Siddharth Menon, provided a solid foundation. "Five years of working together in theatre gave us all a referral point for our individual journeys," he noted.
Balancing Art and Business in the Industry
Mahajan candidly discussed the challenges of navigating the entertainment industry, where art often conflicts with business interests. "I have always tried to balance art and business, often preferring art over financial gain," he shared. He revealed that he has turned down lucrative projects that didn't satisfy his artistic instincts. "It's my way of preserving my art. The industry is ultimately about business, and when art and business clash, it creates confusion. Everyone seeks returns, but keeping the artiste alive is crucial."
Reflecting on his breakthrough role as Saurabh Mandal in Pitchers, Mahajan described it as a turning point. "It brought me national exposure and visibility, especially before the OTT boom, with episodes garnering around 15 million views. This helped me secure Hindi projects and break the Marathi actor identity barrier," he explained.
Embracing Physicality and Continuous Learning
In recent years, Mahajan has focused on enhancing his craft through body movement and dance. "Many actors rely heavily on words, but I've learned to use the body to communicate emotions," he said. Over the past 5-6 years, he has studied contemporary dance, worked with a Tamil theatre group in Pondicherry, and engaged in physical theatre. "Dance has allowed me to adapt my body language for different characters, drastically changing my approach to roles."
He also trains other actors in body movement techniques, emphasizing the importance of stepping out of comfort zones. "I love to challenge myself. Taking brave decisions is key to doing something worthwhile, and I draw inspiration from teachers, classical singers, and dancers who have done the same," Mahajan stated.
Upcoming Projects and Future Endeavors
Looking ahead, Mahajan has several exciting projects in the pipeline. He will appear as a villain in a Hindi OTT series and star opposite Mukta Barve in a Marathi film. His role in Trijya continues to showcase his dedication to nuanced storytelling, portraying a young artist's struggle to find his place in an urban landscape.
Through his journey, Abhay Mahajan remains committed to artistic integrity while navigating the commercial demands of showbiz, serving as an inspiration for aspiring actors in the industry.
