Popular Bengali actor Anirban Chakraborty, widely recognized for his beloved screen portrayal of the detective Eken Babu, had a frighteningly close call on Saturday morning when his car was rear-ended by a government bus in South Kolkata.
A Terrifying Collision Near Rabindra Sarobar
The incident unfolded around 10:30 am on Saturday as Chakraborty was travelling from the Tollygunge area towards the Exide crossing. According to accounts, when their car was close to the Rabindra Sarobar Metro station, another vehicle suddenly came out from a side street. This forced Chakraborty's driver to brake hard to avoid a direct collision.
However, a government bus operating on Route AC-47 (Kudghat-Shapoorjee), which was following behind, failed to maintain a safe distance. It crashed into the rear of the actor's car. The impact was severe enough to shatter the car's rear windshield and cause damage to other parts of the vehicle.
Driver's Attitude and Police Response
Speaking about the harrowing experience, Anirban Chakraborty stated that the accident was entirely preventable. He claimed the bus driver did not keep a safe following distance. The actor also reported to the police that the government bus driver was extremely rude and showed no remorse for the incident.
Personnel from the Tollygunge Police Station initially arrived at the scene. Since the accident technically fell under the jurisdiction of the Charu Market Police Station, officers from there also responded. Both the actor's damaged car and the bus were taken to the police station for investigation, and the bus driver was taken in for questioning.
Official Confirmation and Aftermath
Deputy Commissioner (South) Priyobrata Roy confirmed the details of the accident. He stated, "A govt bus on Route AC-47 on Saturday dashed into Chakraborty's car from behind, and the car's rear glass was damaged. None was injured. A case has been initiated at the Charu Market Police Station."
Following necessary procedures, Chakraborty's car was later released from police custody. However, the government bus involved in the collision was confiscated. Fortunately, despite the significant damage to the vehicle, no one involved in the accident sustained any physical injuries.
The incident has highlighted concerns about road safety and the conduct of public transport drivers in the city, leaving the popular actor shaken but thankful for his narrow escape.
