Adivi Sesh Reveals Audition Struggles and Cultural Identity Conflicts

Renowned Telugu film actor Adivi Sesh, celebrated for his blockbuster performances in movies like ‘Major’, ‘HIT 2’, and ‘Goodachari’, has candidly shared the unique challenges he faced during his early career. In a revealing conversation with the Indian Express, Sesh detailed his journey from growing up in San Francisco to establishing himself as a prominent figure in the Telugu film industry.

The Audition Experience: A Tale of Cultural Duality

Sesh recounted his initial foray into acting when he traveled to Mumbai to audition for Ram Gopal Varma after spotting an open casting call for a television serial in a newspaper. “I didn’t even know what a serial is because it was called a TV show in the US,” he admitted, highlighting his unfamiliarity with Indian media terminology.

His audition process quickly became a reflection of his cultural hybridity. “I felt stuck in between. I was too Indian for America and too American for India,” Sesh explained. This duality manifested during his auditions when casting directors noted his accent. After stating he was from San Francisco, they remarked on his American accent in Hindi. The following week, when he claimed Hyderabad as his origin, they pointed out a South Indian twang in his speech.

“So, I was too Indian for America, too American for India, too North Indian for South India, and too South Indian for North India,” Sesh said with a laugh, encapsulating the identity struggles many diaspora artists face when entering Indian cinema.

Perspectives on Nepotism and Industry Dynamics

Sesh also offered insightful commentary on the pervasive issue of nepotism in Indian cinema. “Honestly, even if you go to an Indian village, the son of a doctor becomes a doctor only, and a farmer’s son becomes a farmer. So, I think we’re a nepo country,” he stated bluntly. However, he emphasized that audiences ultimately prioritize talent over connections. “But audiences don’t care. People only care if you do something different.”

He expressed optimism about the evolving landscape, noting that the industry has become more democratic compared to previous eras, allowing outsiders greater opportunities to showcase their abilities.

Support from Telugu Cinema Royalty

Despite being an outsider, Sesh acknowledged the significant support he received from established film families in Telugu cinema. He attributed this to his luck and dedication. Major stars have backed his projects: Mahesh Babu produced ‘Major’, Nani produced ‘HIT: The Second Case’, and Annapurna Studios, owned by Nagarjuna and his family, is producing his upcoming film ‘Dacoit’.

This endorsement from industry heavyweights underscores Sesh’s rising stature and the respect he has earned through his work ethic and distinctive performances.

Upcoming Project: ‘Dacoit’

Adivi Sesh’s next venture is the highly anticipated revenge action thriller ‘Dacoit’, where he stars alongside Mrunal Thakur. The film also features notable actors Anurag Kashyap and Prakash Raj in pivotal roles, promising an intense cinematic experience for audiences.

Through his journey, Adivi Sesh exemplifies resilience and adaptability, navigating cultural barriers and industry biases to carve a niche in competitive Telugu cinema. His story serves as an inspiration for aspiring actors facing similar challenges in the entertainment world.
