On World Chocolate Day, India's very own 'Chocolate Town' beckons visitors from Bengaluru, just a six-hour drive away. The town's naturally cool, high-altitude climate creates ideal conditions for chocolate making, according to local chocolatiers.
The Chocolate Town: Ooty
Located in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu, Ooty is renowned for its pleasant weather and scenic landscapes. Its moderate temperatures and humidity levels are perfect for tempering and storing chocolate, making it a hub for artisanal chocolate production.
Ooty's chocolate industry has grown significantly, with many small-scale producers crafting bean-to-bar chocolates using locally sourced cocoa. The town's elevation of about 2,240 meters above sea level ensures a consistent cool climate year-round, as noted by the Nilgiris Tourism Department.
Chocolate Attractions
Visitors can explore the M&N Chocolate Museum, which showcases the history and process of chocolate making. The museum offers tastings and workshops, attracting tourists and chocolate enthusiasts. An Instagram post by @mnchocolatesmuseum highlights the museum's exhibits and interactive sessions.
According to a 2025 report by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Board, Ooty receives over 2 million tourists annually, with a significant portion visiting chocolate-related attractions. The chocolate industry contributes approximately ₹50 crore to the local economy.
How to Reach
Bengaluru to Ooty is a 270-kilometer journey, taking about 6 hours by road via the NH 181 and NH 67 highways. The route passes through Bandipur National Park and the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, offering scenic views. Alternatively, travelers can take a train from Bengaluru to Mettupalayam and then the Nilgiri Mountain Railway to Ooty.
Celebrating World Chocolate Day
World Chocolate Day, observed on July 7, celebrates the introduction of chocolate to Europe in 1550. In Ooty, local chocolatiers host special events, including chocolate-making demonstrations and discounts on products. The Ooty Chocolate Festival, held annually in February, also draws crowds.
As per the International Cocoa Organization, India produces about 20,000 tonnes of cocoa annually, with Tamil Nadu being a key producer. The state's cocoa cultivation has expanded by 15% in the last five years, supporting the chocolate industry.
