Akshay Kumar and Priyadarshan Weigh In on Bollywood Age Gap Debate
Akshay Kumar, Priyadarshan Address Bollywood Age Gap Discussion

Akshay Kumar and Priyadarshan Share Views on Bollywood Age Gap Controversy

The conversation surrounding age differences between actors portraying romantic leads in Bollywood has been intensifying in recent months. This debate gained significant attention when 20-year-old Sara Arjun was cast opposite 40-year-old Ranveer Singh in Aditya Dhar's upcoming film Dhurandhar, and when 29-year-old Rashmika Mandanna played the wife of 60-year-old Salman Khan in Sikandar.

Akshay Kumar's Perspective on Age Differences

Now, veteran actor Akshay Kumar, who is set to appear alongside 32-year-old Wamiqa Gabbi in the horror-comedy Bhooth Bangla, has entered the discussion. In an exclusive interview with News18, Akshay shared his candid thoughts on the matter. He stated, "Toh kya hai? Humne pehle dekha nahi hai kya kabhi? It happens in Hollywood as well. Sometimes, it's the requirement of the script. In real life too, so many people get married to partners older or younger than them."

Reflecting on his experience working with Wamiqa Gabbi, Akshay elaborated, "I first met Wamiqa when we were shooting for Bhooth Bangla. She works very differently. She keeps reading her scenes and rehearsing for them. She gets very serious. Tabu is more serious than her. Vidya Balan, who I'm working with in Anees Bazmee ji's film, on the other hand, believes in being a free actor."

Priyadarshan Explains the Concept of Screen Age

Director Priyadarshan, who is helming Bhooth Bangla, also addressed the age gap debate, emphasizing the crucial distinction between an actor's chronological age and their perceived screen age. He explained, "There's something that people like MGR and NTR used to say... that there's a big difference between chronological age and screen age. An actor's screen age may not be his real age, but people accept you for your screen age too. I don't see any issue there."

Priyadarshan further detailed his directorial approach, noting, "When I shoot, I may look at a pair and feel like it isn't the right pair, and that may have nothing to do with their age gap. When I shoot with Akshay or Tabu, I never feel an issue looking at them. And once audiences watch the film, I notice that they don't feel that issue either. That's because of their characters and their screen age."

Details About the Upcoming Film Bhooth Bangla

Bhooth Bangla features an ensemble cast including Paresh Rawal, Rajpal Yadav, Tabu, and the late Asrani. The film is scheduled for a theatrical release on April 10, marking the highly anticipated reunion of Akshay Kumar and Priyadarshan after 14 years, following their last collaboration in Khatta Meetha in 2010.

Interestingly, this horror-comedy shares a nostalgic connection with the classic film Bhool Bhulaiyaa from 2007, as both projects were filmed at the historic Chomu Palace in Jaipur. This location adds a layer of authenticity and visual appeal to the cinematic experience.

The ongoing discourse about age gaps in Bollywood reflects broader societal conversations about representation and authenticity in cinema. As filmmakers and actors continue to navigate these discussions, the focus remains on storytelling and character development, with screen age often playing a more significant role than real-life age differences.
