Akshay Kumar and Priyadarshan Celebrate a Harmonious Partnership Ahead of 'Bhooth Bangla' Release

In a recent joint interview, Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar and acclaimed director Priyadarshan emphasized their seamless collaboration, highlighting a relationship built on mutual respect and agreement. The duo, set to release their first film together in 14 years, the horror-comedy 'Bhooth Bangla' on April 10, 2026, reflected on their journey from the 2000 cult classic 'Hera Pheri' to their current ventures.

No Room for Disagreements in a Fruitful Alliance

Akshay Kumar stated, "If I tell him, 'Sir, this looks nice?', and he says, 'No', then I don't do it. There's no disagreement." Priyadarshan echoed this sentiment, adding, "That word, that meaning is not there in our dictionary." This perfect sync has fueled their successful partnership, which includes hit comedies like 'Garam Masala', 'Bhagam Bhaag', 'Bhool Bhulaiyya', 'De Dana Dan', and 'Khatta Meetha'.

'Bhooth Bangla': A New Venture Blending Horror and Comedy

Their upcoming film, 'Bhooth Bangla', marks a departure into the horror-comedy genre. Priyadarshan, who does not believe in ghosts, and Akshay, who believes in "energies", see this difference as a creative strength. The director explained, "We are exploiting the weakness and putting a lot of logic into it and trying to make a fantasy. It's a fantasy, this could happen or not happen." The film features a star-studded cast including Wamiqa Gabbi, Paresh Rawal, Tabu, and Rajpal Yadav, and is produced by Kumar, Shobha Kapoor, and Ektaa R Kapoor.

The Genesis of a Comedy Legacy with 'Hera Pheri'

Priyadarshan recalled how 'Hera Pheri' transformed Akshay's image from an action star to a comedic talent. Initially offering Akshay the hero's role, he was surprised when the actor chose to play Raju instead. Akshay explained, "I said, 'just one change, I want to play Raju if possible'. He said but the role doesn't have a heroine opposite him and I was like, 'I'll do it'." This decision proved pivotal, with the film becoming a landmark in Indian comedy.

Akshay credited Priyadarshan for teaching him situational comedy, moving beyond the "buffoonery" of earlier roles. He noted, "He taught me situational comedy. I also learnt about the importance of an editor and what the conviction of a director means." The success led to a sequel, 'Phir Hera Pheri' in 2006, and plans for 'Hera Pheri 3' are underway.

Future Projects and Enduring Friendship

Beyond 'Bhooth Bangla', the pair has multiple projects in the pipeline:

  • 'Haiwaan': An action thriller where Akshay plays a villain, co-starring Saif Ali Khan.
  • 'Hera Pheri 3': The much-anticipated third installment of the beloved comedy franchise.

Priyadarshan expressed hope for the partnership to continue, stating, "My comfort level, luck and success in Bollywood, most of the credit goes to Akshay. I hope it will continue even after this film." Akshay, in turn, is grateful for the opportunity to explore diverse roles, such as the villain in 'Haiwaan'.

Their collaboration, spanning over two decades, stands as a testament to trust and creative synergy in the film industry, promising more entertainment for audiences worldwide.
