Anurag Kashyap's Gritty Crime Drama Nishaanchi Arrives on Prime Video

In a swift digital move, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap's hard-hitting crime drama, Nishaanchi, has officially started streaming on Prime Video. The platform confirmed the news on Friday, November 14, marking a rapid transition for the film, which had its theatrical release just two months prior on September 19.

A Star-Studded Cast and a Decade-Long Journey

The film is particularly notable for marking the acting debut of Aaishvary Thackeray, the grandson of Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray. Thackeray takes on the challenging role of twin brothers, Babloo and Dabloo, whose identical appearances hide starkly different moralities.

The cast is further strengthened by Monika Panwar, who plays the twins' mother, and Vedika Pinto as Rinku, Babloo's love interest. Seasoned actors and frequent Kashyap collaborators Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub and Kumud Mishra also feature in significant roles.

According to its IMDb logline, the narrative delves into profound themes of "brotherhood, betrayal, love, and redemption," using the twins' criminal journey to reflect on the complexities of human nature.

Kashyap recently revealed that the screenplay for Nishaanchi was originally penned back in 2016. He held onto the project for nearly a decade, waiting for the right production support. He stated he was determined to find a studio "that trusted me to do that, wholeheartedly" before moving forward.

Production, Release, and Kashyap's Packed Slate

Nishaanchi is produced by Ajay Rai and Ranjan Singh under Jar Pictures, in association with Flip Films. The distribution is handled by Amazon MGM Studios.

Despite its high-profile backing and mature storyline, the film's theatrical run in September was met with mixed reviews from critics and faced commercial challenges. Reports indicate it grossed a modest ₹1 crore at the box office.

Far from slowing down, Anurag Kashyap is currently in the spotlight for his incredibly busy schedule. He recently dismissed rumors of retiring from filmmaking, joking that he is "busier than Shah Rukh Khan" and has five directorial projects lined up, with his calendar fully booked until 2028.

His upcoming work includes the highly anticipated crime-thriller ‘Bandar’ (Monkey in a Cage), inspired by true events and starring Bobby Deol and Sanya Malhotra. He is also involved in a Tamil horror-thriller titled ‘Unkill 123’, where he is rumored to play a powerful negative role. On the production front, he recently backed the 2025 Tamil coming-of-age drama 'Bad Girl'.

For Kashyap, Nishaanchi holds a special place, as the story of twin brothers allowed him to revisit core themes of loyalty, identity, and betrayal—motifs that have consistently defined his celebrated filmography, from Gangs of Wasseypur to Ugly.
