AR Rahman Clarifies Bollywood Remarks, Says Words Were Misunderstood
AR Rahman Clarifies Bollywood Remarks After Backlash

Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman has faced significant criticism following his recent comments about perceived communal bias within the Hindi film industry. The backlash erupted across various social media platforms, with many users expressing strong disapproval of his remarks.

Rahman Breaks Silence with Video Message

After maintaining silence for several days, the renowned 'Vande Mataram' singer finally addressed the controversy directly. He took to his official Instagram account to share a heartfelt video message with his followers and the public.

In the video, Rahman began by stating, "Dear friends, music has always been my way of connecting, celebrating and honouring a culture." He emphasized his deep connection to India, calling it his inspiration, teacher, and home. The musician acknowledged that intentions can sometimes be misunderstood in communication.

"I have never wished to cause pain and I hope my sincerity is felt," Rahman declared clearly. He expressed feeling blessed to be Indian and highlighted how India provides artists with freedom of expression while respecting diverse cultures and voices.

Reflecting on His Musical Journey

Rahman also used the opportunity to reflect on his extensive career in music. He explained how every project has strengthened his artistic purpose over the years. The composer mentioned several significant milestones that have shaped his professional life.

These include presenting Jala at the Wave Summit before the Honourable Prime Minister, collaborating with young Naga musicians to create a string orchestra, and mentoring the Sunshine Orchestra. He also discussed building Secret Mountain, which represents India's first multicultural virtual band, and scoring 'Ramayana' with legendary composer Hans Zimmer.

The Original Comments That Sparked Controversy

For those unfamiliar with the initial controversy, Rahman previously spoke to BBC Asian Network about receiving fewer opportunities in Bollywood. During that interview, he made several pointed observations about the industry's current dynamics.

"People who are not creative have the power now to decide things," Rahman stated. He suggested this situation "might have been a communal thing also, but not in my face." The musician explained he typically heard about such matters indirectly through others rather than experiencing them firsthand.

Rahman provided a specific example, saying, "They booked you, but the music company went ahead and hired their five composers." He concluded the interview on a lighter note, remarking that reduced work allowed him more family time, saying "That's great, rest for me, I can chill out with my family."

The recent clarification aims to address the widespread reaction to these earlier statements, with Rahman emphasizing his respect for India's cultural diversity and his commitment to artistic expression.
