Asha Bhosle's Kannada Debut: 2010 Dispute Debunked

The Truth Behind Asha Bhosle's Kannada Debut: A 2010 Controversy Unraveled

In 2010, a dispute erupted in the Kannada film industry over the legendary singer Asha Bhosle's debut in the language. Composer Veer Samarth asserted that on February 2 of that year, he recorded a song with Bhosle, marking her first Kannada rendition. However, producer E Krishnappa and his team for the film Matte Mungaru countered this claim, presenting a video statement from Bhosle herself. In it, she confirmed recording a song for Krishnappa's Kannada movie on January 16, 2010, and stated that this was her debut in the language, not Samarth's recording.

Historical Records Reveal the Real Debut

As it turns out, both parties were mistaken. Despite Bhosle's illustrious career spanning decades, she has sung only a few songs in Kannada, leading to a memory lapse about her early work. Research into film archives shows that all three Mangeshkar sisters—Lata Mangeshkar, Usha Mangeshkar, and Asha Bhosle—made their Kannada debut in the same film: Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna, released in 1967 and directed by BT Athani. This historical fact corrects the 2010 confusion.

In that film, Bhosle performed the song 'Yako Yeno Seraga Nillavaldu', an item number of its era. While Lata Mangeshkar's track 'Bellane Belagayitu' became the hit from the album, Bhosle's contribution marked her entry into Kannada cinema. The film also featured a song by Manna Dey, adding to its musical legacy.

Bhosle's Kannada Career: A Brief but Memorable Journey

Following her debut, Bhosle's next notable Kannada song came in Doorada Betta (1973), which remains her most popular rendition in the language. Directed by Siddalingaiah, this film had strong Marathi connections: its plot was adapted from the 1965 National Award-winning Marathi film Sadhi Mansa, and the song itself drew inspiration from Marathi Tamasha theatre. Popular Marathi actress and dancer Usha Chavan starred alongside Rajkumar in the movie. Even after over 50 years, all three songs from Doorada Betta, including Bhosle's, are cherished by fans, cementing the film's iconic status in Kannada cinema.

After Doorada Betta, there was a significant gap of 37 years before Bhosle returned to Kannada in 2010. For Krishnappa's Matte Mungaru, she recorded the solo song 'Helade Kaarana' on January 16, with lyrics by Dwarki Raghava, who also directed the film. This recording sparked the initial debate with Samarth.

The 2010 Recordings and Their Unfortunate Fate

In February 2010, Veer Samarth recorded another song with Asha Bhosle at Mumbai's Spectral Harmony studio. Titled 'Jotegaaranilla, Joteyaaru Illa, Jotegaara Ninagaagi Naa Kaadiruve' and penned by Raghavendra Kamath, this item song became embroiled in controversy. Samarth was uncertain about which film would use it, leading to a dispute between the producers of Mandahasa (Basava Reddy) and Manikya (Prathap Gowda). Gowda claimed the rights, but his film was never produced. Mandahasa released in 2013 without the Bhosle song, leaving her last recorded Kannada track unused.

Samarth expressed regret over the situation, noting that the song remains with him but has found no takers. "After Manikya was dropped, the song stayed with me. I offered it to several filmmakers, but they requested lyric changes or composition alterations to fit their projects. It became impossible to place it in any movie," he lamented. Thus, Bhosle's final Kannada recording lies dormant, a poignant end to her sporadic contributions to the language's film music.

This revelation underscores the importance of historical accuracy in preserving cultural heritage, especially for legendary artists like Asha Bhosle, whose rare Kannada works deserve recognition beyond fleeting disputes.
